There’s something about an Indian family gathering. The food is never in short supply, neither is the unsolicited advice, and somebody is almost always getting on somebody else’s nerves. But beneath the endless conversations, disagreements and familiar chaos lies a kind of love that’s hard to find anywhere else.
Perhaps that’s why family dramas have always held a special place in Hindi cinema. They remind us that families are rarely perfect, often complicated, and almost always worth celebrating.
From multi-generational misunderstandings to unexpected reunions and second chances, here are five films that capture the many moods of family life, with plenty of laughter and a little emotion along the way.
1. Meethe Mein Kya Hai (2026)
Cast: Ritwik Bhowmik, Rohini Hattangadi, Ayesha Raza Mishra, Tarana Raja, Abhay Kaul, Gaurav Sharma, Dalai, Vikram Bakshi
Set against the festivities of Diwali in Lucknow, Meethe Mein Kya Hai brings three generations together under one roof for four days of celebrations, family drama and plenty of loving interference. At the centre is Jai (Ritwik Bhowmik), a young widower who has quietly withdrawn from the world, only to find himself drawn back into the familiar chaos of his grandmother’s home. When his sister arrives with a surprise husband, the celebrations take an unexpected turn.
Written and directed by debut filmmaker Radhika Bansal, the film finds humour in the peculiar ways Indian families express affection, from asking too many questions to offering advice nobody asked for. With Rohini Hattangadi as the spirited family matriarch and a colourful ensemble cast, it’s a warm, witty story about grief, acceptance and the comforting madness of belonging. Featuring music by Amit Trivedi, the film captures not just the festivities of Diwali, but the feeling of coming home.

2. Kapoor & Sons (2016)
Cast: Sidharth Malhotra, Fawad Khan, Alia Bhatt, Rishi Kapoor, Ratna Pathak Shah, Rajat Kapoor
When two estranged brothers return to their childhood home to visit their ailing grandfather, old rivalries, unresolved tensions and family secrets begin to surface. Set in Coonoor, Kapoor & Sons follows a seemingly ordinary family dealing with complicated relationships, unspoken resentments and the pressure of keeping up appearances.
Directed by Shakun Batra, the film beautifully captures the messy reality of family relationships, where love and resentment often exist side by side. With its heartfelt performances, understated humour and emotional storytelling, Kapoor & Sons is a reminder that families may not always understand one another, but the bonds they share are difficult to replace.
The movie is currently streaming on Prime Video.
3. English Vinglish (2012)
Cast: Sridevi, Adil Hussain, Mehdi Nebbou, Priya Anand
Few films capture the quiet, everyday sacrifices within a family as beautifully as English Vinglish. Sridevi plays Shashi, a homemaker whose limited command of English makes her the subject of casual ridicule, even within her own household. A trip to New York for a family wedding offers her an unexpected opportunity to rediscover her confidence and sense of self.
Funny, tender and deeply relatable, Gauri Shinde’s directorial debut is as much about finding one’s voice as it is about learning to appreciate the people we sometimes take for granted. And at its heart is a lovely reminder that respect and understanding are just as important as love.
The movie is currently available to watch on Prime Video.
4. Badhaai Ho (2018)
Cast: Ayushmann Khurrana, Neena Gupta, Gajraj Rao, Sanya Malhotra, Surekha Sikri, Sheeba Chaddha
What happens when a middle-aged couple announces that they're expecting a baby, much to the embarrassment of their grown-up son? That's the premise of Badhaai Ho, a family comedy that turns an unexpected pregnancy into a series of hilarious situations.
Starring Ayushmann Khurrana, Neena Gupta and Gajraj Rao, the film explores the awkwardness, social judgement and family drama surrounding the news. Beneath its humour, however, lies a heartwarming story about acceptance, relationships and letting people live their lives without worrying about what others might say. A fun, relatable watch that celebrates families in all their unpredictable glory.
The movie is streaming on JioHotstar.
5. Binny and Family (2024)
Cast: Anjini Dhawan, Pankaj Kapur, Himani Shivpuri, Rajesh Kumar, Charu Shankar
What happens when a fiercely independent teenager and her traditional grandparents are suddenly expected to share a home? Plenty of arguments, awkward encounters and, eventually, some unexpected understanding.
Set between two generations with very different ideas of how life should be lived, Binny and Family explores the familiar friction between old-school values and modern attitudes. But rather than choosing sides, the film finds its charm in the gradual realisation that beneath their differences, grandparents and grandchildren may have more in common than they think. A lighthearted and affectionate look at the generation gap.
