Ranabaali: Vijay Deverakonda’s upcoming Telugu film Ranabaali has generated strong buzz online ever since its first glimpse was released. Directed by Rahul Sankrityan, the period drama is scheduled to release in theatres on September 11, 2026. With its intense visuals and historical setting, many fans are now curious to know whether Ranabaali is based on real events. Here’s a closer look at the inspiration behind the film and what the makers have revealed so far.

What Is the Real Story Behind Ranabaali?

According to reports, Ranabaali draws inspiration from the turbulent history of Rayalaseema, a region in southern Andhra Pradesh. The film is set against the backdrop of the region’s decline following the fall of the Vijayanagara Empire. After the empire collapsed, Rayalaseema faced severe hardships, including repeated famines, widespread poverty, sudden deaths and farmer suicides. The region also witnessed growing oppression by powerful local landlords known as Palegars, who controlled land, resources and people. Over time, constant power struggles, political rivalry and violence earned Rayalaseema the reputation of being a deeply troubled land.

Rayalaseema has long been associated with intense political factionalism, inter-family feuds and land disputes. Districts such as Kadapa, Anantapur and Kurnool were major centres of these conflicts, with Kadapa often seen as the epicentre. Local loyalties were frequently used to gain political power, creating cycles of poverty and violence. During the 20th century, several political figures allegedly exploited these divisions to strengthen their vote banks. Caste, class and gender-based issues were among the key reasons behind the prolonged conflicts. Reports suggest that over 4,000 people lost their lives due to factional violence in the region over the years.

Rayalaseema is a drought-prone region with limited irrigation facilities. Despite being rich in minerals, the area remained economically backward due to exploitation by local landlords and mining mafias. During the British Raj, the Sri Bagh Pact of 1937 was signed to ensure Rayalaseema benefited from the Coastal Andhra region. However, the promises made under the pact were not fully honoured, leading to further regional tensions and resentment, which continued for decades.
