James Tolkan, best known for playing Mr. Strickland in the Back to the Future series and Commander Stinger in Top Gun, has passed away at the age of 94. He died in Saranac Lake, New York, his management confirmed. A crew member from Back to the Future remembered him as incredibly kind, noting how he often delighted fans by recreating his iconic scenes with Michael J. Fox, humorously calling them 'slackers', much like his on-screen persona.
Born in Michigan and raised in Chicago and Tucson, Tolkan graduated in 1949 and later served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He eventually moved to New York City, where he trained in acting under renowned teachers Stella Adler and Lee Strasberg.

James Tolkan, originally from Michigan, spent parts of his early life in Chicago before settling in Tucson, Arizona, where he graduated from Amphitheater High School in 1949. His journey into acting later took him to New York, where he honed his craft and built a lasting career. Tolkan was part of the original Broadway cast of Glengarry Glen Ross and frequently collaborated with director Sidney Lumet on films like Serpico, Prince of the City, and Family Business.
He became a pop culture icon with his role as Mr. Strickland in Back to the Future, reprising it in its sequels, and also appeared alongside Tom Cruise in Top Gun. He continued working in film and television until 2011.

Tolkan later settled in the Lake Placid area, where he built a home in 1996 to house his art collection. He is survived by his wife Parmelee and three nieces, with his family requesting donations in his memory to local Humane Society chapters.
