After thirty-two years, Thenmavin Kombathu is heading back to big screens. Priyadarshan’s much-loved 1994 Malayalam movie, led by Mohanlal, Shobana and Nedumudi Venu, is set for a theatrical re-release on October 8, 2026.
For a movie that has remained firmly embedded with the Malayalam audience, the comeback is significant for another reason. The original 35mm negative has been scanned in 8K and digitally restored to Super 4, while the sound has been mixed in Dolby Atmos for contemporary viewers.
The restoration is a joint effort by Prasad Corporation and Matinee Now.
Story of Thenmavin Kombathu
Released on May 13, 1994, Thenmavin Kombathu is a story of Manikyan and Sreekrishnan Thampuran. They have been very good friends since childhood, but their relationship is tested when both develop romantic feelings for Karthumbi, played by Shobana.
The romantic love triangle between the lead actors is the main plot of the movie. But as it is Priyadarshan’s classic, there is comedy, drama, and music. Its rural setting, supporting characters and stunning visuals are nearly as memorable as its central love story.
The balance in the tone was a key part of the movie’s success. Thenmavin Kombathu moves from broad comedy to romance and emotional drama without abandoning its distinctly Malayalam setting and character-driven humour.
