Malayalam cinema has built a strong reputation for thrillers that trust the story more than spectacle. ZEE5’s Malayalam catalogue reflects that range, with films that move between cybercrime, murder investigations, psychological mysteries and family-driven crime dramas.
If you are looking for a thriller to stream rather than spend time endlessly browsing, these five Malayalam films make a strong starting point. The ranking below is based on their current IMDb ratings, while the films themselves have been picked for the different flavours of suspense they offer.

1. Balan: The Boy
Chidambaram's Balan: The Boy takes the thriller route through a child's perspective. The story follows Balan, a young boy searching for his missing mother after a turbulent childhood, gradually uncovering questions about his past and the circumstances surrounding her disappearance.
Balan: The Boy is different from other conventional mysteries because of the way information is filtered through the child's understanding of events. The film is equally interested in how childhood memories can shape what a person believes about their own past.
Why It Is Perfect: If you want a Malayalam thriller that combines mystery with an emotional, character-driven story, this is the most distinctive pick on the list.
2. Operation Java
Operation Java is the kind of crime thriller that gets its mileage from the work behind an investigation. Directed by Tharun Moorthy, the film follows two unemployed engineering graduates who get an opportunity to assist the Kochi cybercrime department.
The cases they encounter involve film piracy, fraud and murder, giving the film several strands to work with rather than reducing the investigation to a single mystery. Balu Varghese, Lukman Avaran, Vinayakan, Shine Tom Chacko and Binu Pappu lead the cast.
Why It Is Perfect: Choose this if you prefer crime thrillers where the investigation itself drives the narrative.
3. Identity
Tovino Thomas leads Identity, a crime thriller built around an unusual investigative clue: an eyewitness remembers the face of a killer, and a sketch artist is brought in to recreate it.
Its central mystery revolves around whether the witness's memory can lead the police to the right man, or whether there is more to the case than initially appears.
Why It Is Perfect: If you want a relatively mainstream Malayalam crime thriller with a star-led cast, a serial-killer investigation and a mystery that keeps changing shape, Identity fits the bill.
4. Paappan
Suresh Gopi returns to the investigative-thriller space in Paappan as Abraham Mathew Mathan, a former police officer who is brought into a murder investigation being led by his estranged daughter, ASP Vincy Abraham.
That relationship gives the film more to work with than the murder case alone. As father and daughter pursue the culprit, their complicated personal history becomes part of the emotional framework of the investigation.
Why It Is Perfect: This is the pick for viewers who enjoy traditional police mysteries, veteran-star performances and a family conflict running alongside the central investigation.
5. Ini Utharam
Ini Utharam begins with a deceptively direct premise. Janaki walks into a police station and surrenders after allegedly committing a murder. But the police investigation soon suggests that the case may not be as straightforward as her confession makes it appear.
Why It Is Perfect: It is a good choice for viewers who prefer a compact thriller built around a suspicious confession, an investigation and gradually revealed motives rather than a large-scale action spectacle.
