Gurugram Municipal Corporation (MCG) has launched a technological initiative to monitor and conserve the city’s ponds. A digital record of all 181 ponds is being created, with the data set to be available online on the corporation’s portal.

The initiative will use Artificial Intelligence (AI) and drone surveys to ensure the security and preservation of the ponds. Drones will capture photographs from multiple angles, while information such as pond maps, depth, and water sources will be stored in a comprehensive database.

Through the AI-based system, authorities will receive instant alerts in case of attempted encroachments, making it easier to prevent illegal activities. Currently, 65 out of Gurugram’s 181 ponds are affected by encroachment. Officials believe that online monitoring will speed up action to remove these encroachments.

Dry or levelled ponds will also be deepened and rejuvenated to promote rainwater harvesting and recharge groundwater. Councillors have been asked to provide details of ponds in their respective wards to ensure local participation in the project.

Pradeep Dahiya, Commissioner of MCG, stated that the complete data will be made available online, and the ponds will be monitored with AI to protect and conserve them. A detailed plan for the project is currently under preparation.

Experts believe the initiative will be crucial in addressing future water crises in the city.
