Even before the onset of Diwali celebrations, residents of Cyber City, are struggling to breathe as the air has turned toxic. Even though the bursting of firecrackers has not yet begun, the city’s air quality has already deteriorated to alarming levels, raising concerns about what the situation will be like after the festival.

On Sunday morning, residents of sectors 102, 104, 108, 110, 112, 114, 89, 84, 83, and 86 woke up expecting a pleasant morning but were instead greeted by dense smog and polluted air. “How has so much poison entered the air?” asked several residents, expressing frustration over the growing pollution and official inaction.

Most roads in Gurugram remain in poor condition, with continuous dust being kicked up throughout the day. Despite this, district administration officials have done little to address the situation. As a result, the city’s air quality has slipped into the “poor” category, with visibility dropping significantly during the night.

Meanwhile, neighbouring Noida has also been engulfed in pollution. On Saturday, it was recorded as the third most polluted city in the country, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 293, while Greater Noida’s AQI stood at 248. In several sectors of Noida, including 125 and 116, pollution has reached the “very poor” category, with AQI readings of 318 and 305, respectively. Residents have started wearing masks again due to breathing difficulties.

Authorities have implemented the first phase of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) to control pollution. However, construction work continues across the city in violation of the guidelines. Dust from uncovered construction materials, heaps of soil, and uncollected garbage along roadsides are contributing to the worsening air quality.

Experts warn that with low wind speeds of around 5 km per hour, pollutants are settling close to the ground, forming a persistent haze over the region. Residents say urgent action is needed to curb dust pollution and enforce construction rules strictly before the situation worsens during Diwali.
