Panic gripped commuters in Gurugram late Monday night after stones of varying sizes suddenly fell inside the Hero Honda Chowk underpass, shattering the windscreens of several vehicles passing through the stretch.

Although no injuries were reported, the incident caused widespread alarm among motorists. Following the incident, the underpass was closed from Tuesday morning as a safety measure, while a team from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) began a detailed inspection of the structure.

The closure triggered massive traffic congestion, with vehicles stuck for several kilometres from Hero Honda Chowk to Umang Bhardwaj Road, and the impact extending to nearby sector roads. Heavy vehicles and buses heading towards the Sector-37 Industrial Area were also caught in the gridlock. Traffic police were deployed on the spot to regulate movement and divert vehicles.

According to eyewitnesses, the stonefall occurred around 12:30 am. Mohit, whose car was damaged in the incident, said a stone fell directly onto his vehicle, completely smashing the windscreen. “I immediately got out and ran,” he said, adding that more than 10 vehicles were damaged. Many drivers left their vehicles at the site after pulling them to the side of the road.

Residents and motorists alerted the police control room, after which police reached the scene and temporarily halted traffic in the underpass. Once the stonefall stopped, traffic was briefly restored before being suspended again for a full safety inspection.

Officials are investigating the cause of the stonefall. Preliminary information suggests that the underpass structure may be deteriorating, with debris breaking off and falling. Notably, a similar incident was reported at the same location about two months ago.

The affected drivers have demanded a thorough administrative inquiry and urgent repairs to prevent further accidents.
