Facing pressure from the National Green Tribunal (NGT) over stalled waste disposal, the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram has launched a new plan to clear the massive Bandhwari landfill. A Rs 96 crore tender process has been initiated to dispose of the estimated 1.4 million tonnes of legacy waste at the site.
This move comes after previous cleanup deadlines were missed, causing the waste pile to grow from 800,000 tonnes to over 1.3 million tonnes in recent years.
New Cleanup Tender And Timeline
According to Municipal Corporation officials, three separate tenders, each worth Rs 32 crore, have been issued.
- Tender Opening: September 30
- Committee Approval: October
- Work Commences: December
- Projected Completion: December 2026
Once the work is awarded, officials claim the landfill will be cleared of existing waste within the new two-year time frame.
Long-Term Solution: Waste-To-Energy Plants
To address the issue sustainably, three waste-to-energy plants are planned for Gurugram, Manesar and Faridabad. Following instructions from Chief Minister Nayab Singh, officials are preparing a detailed project plan.
Currently, the Bandhwari site receives waste from all three cities, including about 1,000 tonnes daily from Faridabad alone. The new plants are intended to significantly reduce this load. This initiative follows a five-year delay on previous announcements to set up similar waste processing facilities at the landfill.

Waste Accumulation: By The Numbers
January 2023: 3.04 million tonnes of waste at the site.
Jan - Dec 2023: 606,000 tonnes of new waste arrived.
Jan - Nov 2024: 584,000 tonnes of new waste arrived.
