Agra Rape News: A 20-year-old engineering student at a college in Agra had to wait for 17 days before the police finally arrested a man on Tuesday who had allegedly raped her. She was later taken to a mental hospital, where she was placed under observation for three days, reports Indian Express. According to the police, the 22-year-old man arrested is pursuing MTech at Indian Institute of Technology, Jammu.
According to the report, the girl, in her complaint to the local police, said she was raped in a moving car by the accused on the evening of August 10. Despite filing a First Information Report (FIR) based on the woman’s complaint on August 11, the police did not arrest the accused. According to her, the police said that the location of the accused at the time of the alleged rape was in Jammu.
According to the victim, she reportedly made several visits to the police stations and even met senior police officers before she finally decided to undress publicly on Sunday so that the police act on the case.
“We called the accused to Agra for further investigation and later arrested him when we found that he had been mentally and physically harassing her for the last few months,” said a senior police officer, reports Indian Express.
According to the police, the accused hails from the Ghazipur district in Uttar Pradesh, and prior to his admission to the IIT, he completed BTech from a university in Agra.
A social worker who saw the woman's public protest on Sunday was quoted as saying, “The woman undressed herself on the road in the afternoon and yelled anti-police slogans. Two women quickly came to her aid, covered her with clothes, and took her to a nearby clinic. We thought she might be mentally distressed and alerted the police, who then took her to the mental hospital.”
The hospital director said, “She was admitted here on Sunday evening, and we kept her under observation for three days. During this period, we closely monitored her daily activities, from morning until bedtime. We observed nothing unusual, and on Tuesday, she was handed over to her mother, who had been brought here from Lucknow.”
