Bengaluru News: On Saturday, the Department of Horticulture confiscated books from members of Cubbon Reads, a community of readers who often gather in Bengaluru's Cubbon Park. The group had assembled to celebrate their annual Secret Santa book exchange event when they allegedly faced harassment from park authorities.
In a social media post, the Cubbon Reads community expressed their distress, claiming they were bullied and forcibly removed by the officials. They insisted that their gathering was peaceful and lawful. “Our experience yesterday has scarred us more than scared us, and we have been overwhelmed by the support from the whole of Bangalore and beyond,” the community stated. They also noted the numerous stories of similar harassment faced by other groups trying to enjoy the park.
The community stated that not only were readers targeted, but other peaceful gatherings were disrupted as well. “They have bullied and kicked out not just readers but so many other well-meaning groups: botanists studying mushrooms, birdwatchers, dancers, designers discussing ideas, free yoga groups—who had their mats taken away and were filmed without consent—and even running clubs. Most of these groups have young people in them,” they added. The post also referenced previous incidents where skaters had been bullied by the same authorities.
Cubbon Reads’ organisers reportedly faced a fine of Rs 35,000 and were threatened with an FIR for holding a gathering without prior approval. They were eventually asked to leave the park after submitting a written apology. Video footage surfaced showing park security personnel seizing books from attendees, leading to a heated argument.
Kusuma G, the Deputy Director of Horticulture at Cubbon Park, defended the actions of the authorities, stating that any gathering of more than 20 people requires permission. In an interview with Deccan Herald, she explained, “There were hundreds of people shouting, screaming and carrying plastic covers inside the park.”
Kusuma also clarified that while certain gatherings are not allowed, religious events do receive permission to take place within the park.
