Jagran Correspondent, Chandigarh: Political activity has once again intensified regarding a possible alliance between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly election. Following the BJP's denial of any agreement with the party associated with Khadur Sahib MP Amritpal Singh, a recent statement by party national president Nitin Nabin is being seen as a new possibility for a relationship with SAD.

BJP state general secretary and former IAS officer Jagmohan Raju has claimed that some leaders of Amritpal Singh's party had proposed an alliance with the BJP. However, he said the BJP has made it clear that it will contest all 117 seats in Punjab in the 2027 elections on its own. Raju's statement has sparked a new debate in Punjab politics about what political options the BJP is considering.

Meanwhile, in an interview with a news channel in Delhi, Nitin Nabin said the party's goal is to strengthen its organisation in Punjab and is assessing all political scenarios. He also indicated that the party is considering all options for its future strategy.

His statement is being seen in political circles as a sign of a possible dialogue with SAD, which has a long political history of ties with the BJP.

The two parties were allies of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) for more than three decades, but in 2020, the Shiromani Akali Dal broke ties with the BJP following protests against the central agricultural laws. Subsequently, the two parties contested the 2022 and 2024 elections separately. However, since the Lok Sabha elections, discussions of a possible reconciliation between the two parties have periodically surfaced.

Meanwhile, SAD President Sukhbir Singh Badal also stated that his party's focus is currently on strengthening its organisation in Punjab. However, he did not explicitly rule out the possibility of a future alliance with the BJP.

Sukhbir had stated that no talks were currently underway. The BJP's dismissal of the possibility of an alliance with Amritpal Singh's party, and Nitin Nabin's measured statement, have reignited speculation about the Akali-BJP relationship.

All eyes are on the strategies of both parties ahead of the upcoming municipal elections and the subsequent assembly elections in 2027. Consequently, new equations may emerge in Punjab politics in the coming months.
