A PhD scholar from Panjab University’s Microbiology Department reportedly died after suffering an electric shock on the Chandigarh campus on Tuesday. The deceased has been identified as Jyoti from Haryana. Following the incident, the University students gheraoed the office of the Executive Engineer of the Electrical Department, alleging negligence in the electrical system.

Chanting slogans outside the VC's office, the students demanded action against the officials responsible for the accident, fixing accountability for the electrical safety system and providing justice to the victim's family.

Victim Suffered Electric Shock And Collapsed

According to Punjabi Jagran, Jyoti was reportedly on her way from Girls' Hostel No. 10 to the Department of Microbiology when the incident occurred. She was walking along an unpaved path beside the road connecting Girls' Hostel No. 8 and the University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET), where she allegedly came into contact with an electric current and collapsed.

Following this, people present at the spot shifted her to the Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 16 (GMCH-16), Chandigarh. However, doctors declared her dead on arrival.

Investigations Underway

The exact circumstances that led to the reported electrocution are yet to be ascertained. Police have launched a detailed investigation into the case. The cops are trying to determine the source of the electric current and establish how the incident took place. The probe will also look into whether any negligence related to electrical infrastructure, maintenance or safety arrangements may have contributed to the incident.

In a separate incident, a woman died after suffering an electric shock while using an immersion water heater in Hyderabad. The incident had taken place at her residence in Peerzadiguda under the Medipally police limits on Monday, July 27.

The deceased had been identified as 40-year-old D. Swathi, a native of Bhongir, was living in Mallikarjuna Nagar with her husband, Srinivas, and their three children.
