Chennai Weather: Chennai’s weather has turned sharply colder since Saturday, as the deep depression that formed in the Bay of Bengal weakened. The city is experiencing chilly conditions due to drizzle and intermittent rainfall. Earlier, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for heavy rainfall on Sunday and warned that rain could persist into January 12, as cloud build-up and winds may trigger fresh showers.

Saturday remained mostly cloudy, with only light drizzle in some areas. However, the IMD has predicted moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms over the next 24-48 hours.

The yellow alert remains in force for Chennai, Chengalpet and Kancheepuram, signalling the possibility of short, intense spells of rain and potential waterlogging in low-lying areas.

Weather officials explained that the city did not receive the anticipated heavy rain on Saturday because the system weakened and remained offshore. Nevertheless, the broader weather circulation is still active, keeping rainfall chances high.
