Delhi Air Polltion: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has stated that the temperature in Delhi is likely to drop by two to three degrees Celsius in the upcoming days. The residents are also set to experience a cold wave and dense fog in the early hours of the day. The national capital witnessed a thick layer of fog in several regions on Sunday, leading to inconveniences for the commuters. The air quality of Delhi and other nearby cities also remained in the 'severe' category on Sunday. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has recorded the air quality index (AQI) of the national capital at 462 at 6 am. The health ministry has advised the residents to limit their outings and wear a mask during the outdoor activities.

Delhi: Air Quality In 'Severe' Category

All the monitoring stations in the national capital suggest that the AQI remained in the 'severe' category in the early hours of Sunday. While the AQI of Rohini was recorded at 499, the AQI of Jahangirpuri and Vivek Vihar remained around 495. According to the CPCB, an AQI within 0-50 is considered 'good'. While the AQI between 51 and 100 is considered 'satisfactory', the AQI between 101 and 200 is considered 'moderate'. The AQI between 201 and 300 is considered 'poor', 301 and 400 'very poor,' and 401 and 500 'severe.'

Earlier on Saturday, the Delhi government announced the enforcement of GRAP Stage 4 restrictions across Delhi-NCR. The government took the action after observing a sharp upward trend in air quality throughout the day. The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) stated that all actions prescribed under GRAP Stage 4, which applies to ‘Severe+’ air quality, have now been activated across the entire NCR.

While explaining the reasons behind the worsening air quality, the CAQM stated that the Western Disturbance approaching northwest India was the main contributing factor behind the situation.
