Arvind Kejriwal Resignation LIVE News: Kejriwal Resigns As Delhi Chief Minister, Atishi Stakes Claim To Form Govt

The Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday congratulated the next Chief Minister of Delhi Atishi but simultaneously took a veiled dig at the senior AAP leader on her remarks that Delhi will only have one CM.

AAP leader and proposed CM Atishi stakes claim to form the new government before Delhi LG VK Saxena.

After Arvind Kejriwal tendered his resignation to the LG, proposed Chief Minister Atishi staked claim to form the next AAP government in Delhi.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday tendered his resignation to Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena to vacate the post of AAP Minister Atishi. Kejriwal had earlier announced he was quitting the CM post to undergo electoral "Agnipariksha" to prove his innocence in the graft case.

Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal along with proposed CM Atishi and other cabinet ministers arrived at the LG secretariat. Arvind Kejriwal is likely to tender his resignation as Delhi CM soon.

Outgoing Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal will soon meet Lt Governor VK Saxena to tender his resignation from the post of Delhi Chief Minister. The LG has welcomed the nomination of Atishi as the next Delhi CM.

"The CM is going to meet me at 4.30 pm and he is welcome. Atishi's name has been recommended. It is a legislative process. She has been chosen by the MLAs. She is also welcome," says Delhi LG Saxena.

Amid Atishi’s elevation, AAP’s Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal said it was a sad day for Delhi as a woman whose family fought a long battle to save Afzal Guru was chosen as the CM. She also called Atishi a ‘dummy CM’.

Delhi CM Kejriwal will today tender his resignation before LG. He would also hand over the proposal of the new CM, who has been elected by party MLAs, to him. 

As Delhi lawmakers unanimously accept Atishi's name for CM, BJP national spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari said the Naxal supporter won’t be accepted by the people in the UT. He also alleged that Atishi’s family tried to stop Afzal Guru's hanging.  

Delhi BJP chief Virendraa Sachdeva said Atishi was chosen as the leader of the Delhi AAP Legislative Party under Manish Sisodia’s pressure. He said Kejriwal took the decision unwillingly.   

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday proposed Atishi’s name to replace him as the CM. She has been elected as the leader of the Delhi AAP Legislative Party, ANI reported citing AAP sources.  

The Delhi Assembly session has been scheduled for September 26-27. This has been confirmed by the Delhi Assembly Speaker's office.

Delhi Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj said he does not think Sunita Kejriwal would be the CM candidate in Delhi. He interacted with the media when he reached Kejriwal’s house for the MLAs meeting. 

Delhi BJP chief Virendraa Sachdeva said the AAP can change CM's face but not the party’s character. He said Kejriwal’s corruption will be the election issue.   

AAP spokesperson Priyanka Kakkar said it was a matter of jot that Delhi was getting a new CM. She said the party will make sure Kejriwal return to the post as soon as possible.

Senior AAP leader Gopal Rai has reached Kejriwal’s residence for the MLA meeting. He said a new CM will be chosen and the government will function under him. Notably, Rai’s name has also been making the rounds for the CM post.

AAP leader Manish Sisodia has reached Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal's residence. AAP MLAs will be holding a crucial meeting at 11.30 am at CM Kejriwal's residence to pick his successor.

There is still suspense over who will be the next Chief Minister in Delhi. People who are in fray include Sunita Kejriwal, Atishi, Saurabh Bharadwaj, Gopal Rai and Kailash Gehlot.

Delhi Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj said the CM chair belongs to Kejriwal as the public mandate was for him. "It does not matter who sits on the CM chair because the mandate was for Arvind Kejriwal. The public chose Arvind Kejriwal. He has said that he will not sit on the CM chair until the people ask again but the chair belongs to Arvind Kejriwal for these and the next 5 years... One of us will sit on the chair until the elections take place. It will be similar to the way Bharat ruled in the absence of Lord Ram... There will be a discussion with the MLAs today and the name may be decided in it"
