President Droupadi Murmu is set to launch the Delhi government’s revamped ‘Delhi Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana’ and roll out a scheme providing two free LPG cylinders annually to poor families, marking a major push towards women’s economic empowerment on Monday.
A special event titled ‘Sashakt Nari, Samriddh Delhi’ will be held at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, where the schemes will be formally unveiled. The programme is being organised by the Department of Women and Child Development.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to empowering women and supporting girls’ education in a changing economic landscape.
The existing Ladli Scheme has been restructured and expanded into the ‘Delhi Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana’ to provide greater financial support to girl children.
Under the earlier framework, financial assistance was deposited at various stages of a girl’s life, including birth and key educational milestones, with the accumulated amount withdrawable at the age of 18.
Under the revised scheme, a total of Rs 56,000 will be deposited in phases in the name of the girl child. With accrued interest, the maturity amount is expected to exceed Rs 1 lakh by the age of 21. The aim is to ensure that girls complete graduation or a professional diploma.
The scheme will be fully digital, with funds managed by SBI Life Insurance Company Limited under the SBI Life Dhanrashi Sadhan plan. On maturity, the accumulated amount will be directly transferred to the beneficiary’s Aadhaar-linked bank account to ensure transparency and financial inclusion.
The scheme will apply to families with an annual income of up to Rs 1.20 lakh who have been residing in Delhi for at least three years. The girl child must be born in Delhi, and benefits will be limited to two living girl children per family. Registration can be completed within one year of birth or at specified educational milestones. The expanded scope also covers girls pursuing graduation or professional diplomas at government- or UGC-recognised institutions across India.
Alongside this, the Delhi government will provide two free LPG cylinders each year, on Holi and Diwali, to ration card-holding families through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).
An amount equivalent to the prevailing market price of one LPG cylinder will be credited directly to the Aadhaar-linked bank account of the head of the household in whose name the ration card is issued.
The scheme is expected to benefit around 15.5 lakh families and aims to ease the financial burden of cooking fuel expenses while helping families celebrate festivals with dignity.
Chief Minister Gupta said the initiative aligns with the broader vision of Narendra Modi, which places daughters at the centre of nation-building through education, dignity and self-reliance.
