Jagran Correspondent | South Delhi: Construction of the second lane on the Kalkaji flyover began Friday on the Outer Ring Road. Authorities have placed barricades near the Okhla NSIC Metro Station, where excavation for pillars is currently underway.

The approximately 30-foot-long and 20-foot-wide barricade has narrowed the road. The blockade has led to traffic jams on the lanes connecting Nehru Place and Modi Mills. Gawar Construction is scheduled to complete the work within 2.5 years.

Commuters may use local surface service roads and alternative interior colony lanes around Greater Kailash and Kalkaji to bypass immediate gridlocks. People can also opt for Mathura Road or alternative parallel corridors if travelling a long distance across South-East Delhi to avoid the Outer Ring Road work zones.

Soil testing and geotechnical surveys were conducted in May. Construction work was kept on hold due to the lack of space to store construction materials. Now, with the arrival of construction materials near the Kalkaji flyover, work has begun.

Previously, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) had made available approximately two acres of land for construction activities near the Savitri Cinema flyover. This land is considered crucial for storing construction materials and ensuring the project progresses without unnecessary traffic disruptions. With the acquired land, the construction agency will no longer face any major difficulties in site operations.

What Did The PWD Say?

In July, PWD Minister Pravesh Verma approved the work to connect the Modi Mill Flyover to the Kalkaji Flyover in December 2025. Despite administrative approval, work could not begin due to a lack of free space.

Gawar Construction has been entrusted with the project, which is being constructed at a cost of approximately Rs 412 crore. According to the plan, the construction of the second lane of both flyovers is scheduled to be completed within the next 24 to 30 months. Officials believe this will significantly increase the traffic capacity of the Outer Ring Road.

Upon completion, the Kalkaji and Savitri Cinema flyovers are expected to play a key role in reducing traffic congestion on the Outer Ring Road. Furthermore, traffic movement is expected to become more smooth on Captain Gaur Marg, GK-2 Road, and nearby major junctions. This will save time for thousands of daily commuters and significantly reduce congestion on major routes in South Delhi.
