Diwali 2025 LIVE Updates: Delhi Chokes Under Smog, Over 170 Fire Calls Reported; Ayodhya And Kedarnath Glow With Diyas

Diwali was celebrated with great fervour and devotion across Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh on Monday. Temples and gurdwaras were packed with devotees offering prayers, while markets buzzed with people making last-minute festive purchases. Homes and streets sparkled with diyas, candles, and colourful lights as families exchanged sweets and greetings, marking the festival with joy and togetherness.

Security arrangements were strengthened across major religious and public places to ensure peaceful celebrations. Extending their greetings, Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria and Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, along with Haryana Governor Ashim Kumar Ghosh and Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, described Diwali as a symbol of light conquering darkness and urged citizens to celebrate in an environmentally conscious and inclusive way.

Adding a compassionate touch to the festivities, Haryana Police organised community outreach drives, visiting orphanages, old-age homes, and slum areas to distribute sweets and light lamps. In Palwal, Superintendent of Police Varun Singla joined children from underprivileged backgrounds to celebrate Diwali, saying that the true essence of the festival lies in sharing happiness and hope with those less fortunate.

A massive fire erupted at a tyre and recycling material godown in Ambala, Haryana, on Monday evening, officials confirmed. Fire department personnel Bachchan Singh told ANI that the control room received information about the incident through Dial 112. Two fire tenders and a water bowser were immediately dispatched to the site, and an additional vehicle was later called in due to the intensity of the blaze.

Firefighting efforts were still underway at the time of reporting. Singh said that the extent of damage would be determined once the fire is completely extinguished. No injuries have been reported so far.

The Delhi Fire Service reported receiving over 170 calls related to fire incidents across the city by 11:30 PM on Diwali night. Officials said the number is expected to rise further as more reports are still being received from different parts of the capital.

On Diwali, Air Chief Marshal AP Singh, Chief of the Air Staff, visited the Ladakh sector to meet Indian Air Force and Indian Army personnel stationed there. Delhi’s air quality deteriorated sharply on Diwali, with many areas touching the ‘severe’ pollution category. A thick layer of smog covered the city on Monday morning as residents experienced poor visibility and heavy air pollution following festive celebrations. Data from the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR) showed alarming AQI levels across several locations — Ashok Vihar at 401, Wazirpur at 418, Mandir Marg at 345, Nehru Nagar at 391, and Punjabi Bagh at 393. Experts warned that the combination of firecrackers and stagnant weather conditions led to the sharp rise in pollution levels.

The Delhi Fire Service (DFS) has cancelled all staff leaves to maintain full readiness during Diwali, officials said on Monday. A senior officer stated that all fire stations and quick response teams (QRTs) are on high alert to handle emergencies efficiently. Over 100 locations across the city will see additional QRT deployment. The officer added that all vehicles have been inspected and are operational. Last year, the DFS received more than 200 fire-related calls linked to crackers and diyas. To ensure preparedness, multiple mock drills were carried out in residential and commercial areas ahead of the festival.

Expressing his pride in spending the festival with the country’s brave soldiers, PM Modi praised the armed forces for their unity and strength during Operation Sindoor. He said, “Just a few months ago, we saw that INS Vikrant, with its name alone, had given sleepless nights to entire Pakistan.
