'No Evidence': Hardeep Singh Puri On Concerns Over E20 Ethanol-Blended Petrol; What He Said On Upcoming E25

E20 Petrol Row: Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Tuesday addressed rumours circulating on social media over alleged adverse impact of E20 ethanol-blended petrol on vehicles, saying there is no proof of those claims.

Regarding concerns about the performance of vehicles after using E20 fuel, Puri stated that there is no evidence to support these claims.

A debate has erupted on social media on the use of E20 petrol. Customers are alleging reduced vehicle mileage and engine damage. There is also speculation that the government may soon increase the ethanol blending level to more than 20 per cent.

Speaking to reporters, the Petroleum Minister said concerns about E20 are not based on evidence, but rather on misinformation. "This is a misunderstanding, and I don't want to use harsher words. There are 200 million two-wheelers and 2 million four-wheelers on the roads that use this fuel. Automobile manufacturers and service providers all said there's no problem. Why this sudden interest?" he questioned.

'E20 Has Been In Use Since Last One Year'

Puri said, "We've been using E15 for the last three and a half years. We've been using E20 since April last year. From April 2025 to April 2026, a year has passed, and now we're five months ahead of that."

Is E25 Coming?

The Petroleum Minister also addressed speculation that the government is preparing to introduce petrol with more ethanol, saying it will take time.

Puri said, "If anyone is suggesting E25, we've made it clear that we're conducting tests. Those tests will take time." Once we receive the reports, we will evaluate them. Then we will discuss the findings with stakeholders and automobile manufacturers."

"After all, I neither make cars nor fuel. Car manufacturers are comfortable with E20. Each of them has issued a statement about it. Customers also like this product (E20)," he added.
