Mild earthquake tremors were felt across Kolkata and several surrounding districts of West Bengal on Friday afternoon, prompting panic among residents who rushed out of their homes and offices.
The tremors lasted for several seconds and were reported from multiple parts of the city. Eyewitnesses said ceiling fans swayed, windows rattled, and furniture shook, with the impact appearing stronger in high-rise buildings.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties. However, many residents took to social media, describing the tremor as lasting between 10 and 15 seconds, with some calling it the “longest earthquake” they had experienced in recent years.
The incident also sparked widespread online speculation. Some social media users questioned whether neighbouring Bangladesh was conducting a secret nuclear test, while others expressed concern over what they perceived as a rise in seismic activity in the region. A few posts also carried lighter reactions, with users making humorous comparisons to recent tremors felt in other cities.
