The Hilal Committee of the Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand (FIANZ) has officially announced that Eid Al-Fitr will be celebrated on April 1, 2025, as the Shawwal crescent was not sighted on Sunday.

A tweet on X warned the police of India's national capital to be alert during Eid on March 31 - April 1 as "some illegal Rohingya/Bangladeshi/Pakistani Muslims may cause Hindu-Muslim riots or bomb blasts in Chandni Chowk, Jama Masjid, Jahangirpuri". The police is yet to respond to this social media warning message. Earlier, Delhi police had stepped up its security measures for Eid celebrations and last Friday prayers in east Delhi.

"We have briefed the staff of every police station in the east district to maintain law and order in the area. We will ensure that maximum staff will be on patrolling and proper pickets will be done. Police presence will be complete," an officer was cited as saying by news agency PTI in a previous report.

The UK-based New Crescent Society has predicted a split Eid this year. As per the statement issued by the New Crescent Society, the split Eid will be caused as the astronomers in Saudi have said that it is impossible to spot Crescent moon today, March 29.

"It looks like we are heading into another split Eid this year, though we will know for sure this weekend. This year is very controversial, as the split is likely to be caused by an 'impossible' moonsighting in Saudi. Of course, these are simply predictions. For local sighters [in the UK], it's quite straightforward. Our 29[th day of] Ramadan will be on Sunday 30 March. The moon will be easily visible in the UK. This means Eid will be on Monday 31 March. This will incidentally be the same date for mosques which follow Morocco / South Africa. For mosques who follow Saudi, things are very controversial. On Saturday, March 29, Saudi will officially look for the moon. On this date, the moon is not scientifically possible to see anywhere in Saudi, the Middle East, Asia, Africa or Europe, even with telescopes. Despite this, it is likely Saudi will produce a scientifically 'impossible' moonsighting. These phantom moon sightings are almost annual occurrences and seem to align with their preprinted Umm al Qura calendar - a calendar which does not match lunar visibility," the statement said.

According to a report by Haramain News, astronomers looking for the Shawwal crescent, have difference of opinions regarding whether the Eid-Ul-Fitr will be celebrated on Sunday or Monday. As per the report, astronomers from at least five observatories argue that Eid should be celebrated on Sunday, while astronemers from at least three observatories say that Eid should be celebrated on Monday.

According to a report by Haramain News, at the Tabuk Observatory, which is the last region in the Kingdom where the sun sets, clouds are now increasing. "The sky over the Shaqra Observatory is currently not clear, and clouds may obstruct the sighting of the Eid crescent. It is sometimes possible to sight the crescent even with clouds in the sky," the observers said.

At Saudi Arabia’s Tumair Observatory, weather conditions are favourable for spotting the Shawwal crescent. Astronomer Muteb Al-Barghash, quoted by Saudi’s Haramain News, stated, “The sun will set at the Tumair observatory site at 6:11 PM, and the crescent moon will set eight minutes later. The skies are mostly clear, with some scattered clouds.”

The search for the Shawwal crescent will take place at more than 20 observatories across Saudi Arabia. The Supreme Court's Crescent Committee will convene at approximately 5:30 PM KSA time (8:00 PM IST) to review reports and analyse potential sightings from these observatories.

According to the International Astronomy Centre, the Crescent Moon has not been sighted in Pakistan after the setting of the Sun. Hence, Pakistan is expected to celebrate Eid-Ul-Fitr on Monday. However, the Pakistan authorities have not made any announcement regarding the Eid 2025 date.

In India, the date of Eid is determined by the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, which is responsible for moon sighting announcements. Various regional committees and local religious authorities also contribute to the decision based on moon sighting reports from different parts of the country. Once the crescent moon of Shawwal is sighted and confirmed, the committee officially announces the date of Eid-ul-Fitr.

Based on time zone differences, Saudi Arabia is 2 hours and 30 minutes behind Indian Standard Time (IST). On March 29, 2025, Muslims in Saudi Arabia will break their fast between 5:56 PM and 6:51 PM local time, depending on the city. The crescent moon, if visible, will be sighted after iftar. In Indian time, this corresponds to a fasting break between 8:26 PM and 9:21 PM. Therefore, the confirmation of whether Saudi Arabia will celebrate Eid 2025 on Sunday is expected within an hour.

There is no news so far that the Crescent Moon has been sighted in Saudi Arabia. The International Astronomy Centre has stated that spotting the Shawwal crescent moon will not be possible anywhere in the Arab and Islamic world on Saturday, March 29, 2025. According to experts, the moon is expected to set before the sun, and the conjunction will take place only after sunset, making the Eid-ul-Fitr 2025 moon sighting unfeasible that evening.

According to a report by Gulf News, Ibrahim Al-Jarwan, an Emirati astronomer and Chairman of the Emirates Astronomy Society, as well as a member of the Arab Union for Space and Astronomy said that precise astronomical calculations confirm the impossibility of sighting the Shawwal crescent after sunset on March 29, 2025, which aligns with 29 Ramadan 1446 AH.

The Indonesian authorities have announced that the Crescent Moon for the Shawwal month has not been sighted in Indonesia. This means that the Ramadan month will complete 30 days this year. Hence, Eid 2025 will be celebrated in Indonesia on Monday, March 31, 2025.

Citing astronomical calculations and moon sighting conditions for Shawwal 1446 AH, they have confirmed that Eid Al-Fitr in Australia will fall on Monday, March 31, 2025.

According to Islamic tradition, the month of Ramadan is either 29 or 30 days long, depending on the sighting of the crescent moon. The length of the month determines when Eid-ul-Fitr will be celebrated.

- If the crescent moon is sighted after 29 days, Ramadan will conclude early, and Eid will be observed the next day. In this case, Saudi Arabia will celebrate Eid on Sunday, and India will observe it on Monday, as Ramadan began a day later in India.

- However, if the moon is not sighted on the 29th day, Ramadan will automatically extend to 30 days. This means Saudi Arabia will celebrate Eid on Monday, and India will mark the festival on Tuesday.

The celebration of Eid depends on the sighting of the new moon of the Shawwal month. The crescent moon is sighted after either 29 or 30 days, as all 12 months in the Hijri calendar end after this duration. This year, Ramadan is expected to complete 30 days, with the 30th day falling on Monday, March 31, 2025. If this holds true, Eid 2025 will be celebrated in India on Tuesday, April 1, 2025.

However, if Eid is observed in Saudi Arabia on Sunday, India will celebrate it on Monday. This is because Ramadan began in Saudi Arabia on April 1, while in India, it started on April 2. According to tradition, Ramadan lasts either 29 or 30 days. If Ramadan lasts 29 days, Saudi Arabia will celebrate Eid on Sunday, and India will observe it on Monday. However, if Ramadan completes 30 days, Eid will be celebrated in Saudi Arabia on Monday and in India on Tuesday.
