As the new year approaches, several policy and regulatory changes are set to take effect from January 1, 2026. These updates will impact banking, digital payments, fuel prices, taxes, salaries, farmers’ benefits and vehicle costs, directly affecting everyday life across the country.

Aadhaar-PAN Linking Deadline

One of the most critical deadlines coming up is Aadhaar-PAN linking. From January 1, PAN cards not linked with Aadhaar will become inactive. This could affect income tax filings, banking transactions and access to government schemes.

Changes In UPI, SIM And Messaging Apps

Digital payment rules are expected to become stricter in the new year. SIM card verification norms will also tighten to curb misuse. Authorities are focusing on messaging platforms like WhatsApp and Telegram to tackle fraud, with efforts aimed at cleaning records and reducing illegal activities.

LPG, CNG And Fuel Price Revisions

Oil companies will revise LPG and commercial gas cylinder prices on January 1. Aviation turbine fuel rates will also be updated.

Additionally, CNG and PNG prices may see changes, which could impact household and transport costs in the coming weeks.

New Income Tax Form Expected

A revised income tax return form is likely to be introduced in January. The new format will capture more details on bank transactions and spending. While this may simplify filing, it will leave little room for incorrect reporting.

What Changes For Workers?

Government employees may see financial relief in the new year.

  • The 8th Pay Commission is expected to be implemented as the 7th Pay Commission ends on December 31

  • Dearness allowance hikes are also anticipated

  • Several states are reviewing minimum wages for daily and part-time workers

New Rules For Farmers

Farmers will also face new requirements from January.

  • In states such as Uttar Pradesh, a unique farmer ID will be mandatory to receive PM-KISAN payments

  • Without the ID, instalments may not be credited

  • Crop insurance coverage is expanding to include damage caused by wild animals, if reported within 72 hours

Stricter Social Media Rules

The Centre is discussing tighter social media regulations, including possible usage limits for children below 16 years.

Vehicles To Get Costlier

Buying a car may become more expensive from January 1. Automakers such as Nissan, MG and Renault are expected to raise prices by up to three per cent.
