Grok, social media platform X’s AI assistant recently messed up Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s diplomatic post to Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu by translating it wrong. PM Modi had shared a post on Tuesday, thanking Muizzu for Republic Day wishes.

Grok’s translated text clearly had factual errors (replacing Republic Day with Independence Day). It also introduced a politically charged tone by attributing statements to PM Modi that were not present in his original post, such as allegations of the Maldivian government’s involvement in “anti-India campaigns”. These claims were neither mentioned nor implied by the Prime Minister.

PM Modi had posted, "I extend my warm greetings and best wishes to you on the occasion of the 77th Republic Day of India. We will continue to work together for the benefit of the people of both countries. I wish all the people of the Maldives a future filled with prosperity and happiness."

Grok Gets The Translation Wrong

"Sukuriyya, Raayithun Majlis. India's 77th Independence Day celebrations were held in the Maldives, and the Maldivian government participated in the event. This Sukuriya government has also been involved in the anti-India campaigns of the people. Even in the two anti-India campaigns, they have been at the forefront of the protests," Grok’s translation stated, conveying a completely different tone and meaning.

India-Maldvies Relations

Earlier in July 2025, PM Modi had graced the Independence Day celebrations of the Maldives as the guest of honour, signalling a turnaround in bilateral ties after a spell of unease.

The renewed intensity in the relations assumes significance as Muizzu came to power in November 2023 on the back of an "India Out" campaign. PM Modi had said India is proud to be the "most trusted" friend of the Maldives and that the friendship will always "remain bright and clear". PM Modi had also announced a Rs 4,850 crore line of credit for the island nation and said both sides have launched negotiations for a free trade deal.

New Delhi also decided to reduce the Maldives' annual debt repayment obligations by 40 per cent (from USD 51 million to 29 million), seen as a significant move to help the country deal with its economic woes.
