A mysterious well in Gujarat's Morbi district has sparked widespread curiosity after its water began moving in continuous wave-like patterns without any apparent trigger. Videos of the unusual phenomenon, recorded in Virparda village, have gone viral on social media, with many users speculating about its cause.
The well, located in a farmer's field, appeared to show constant ripples despite no visible object disturbing the water. According to residents, the movement occasionally became so intense that water spilt over the edge of the well. The unusual sight attracted large crowds from nearby villages, while several motorists travelling on the adjoining highway stopped to witness it.
Social Media Flooded With Theories
As clips of the well circulated online, social media users offered a range of explanations. Some linked the phenomenon to strong winds, while others suggested underground pressure changes or vibrations caused by nearby traffic.
A user wrote, “Trapped air or anything cannot create such high/frequent 'waves'. There has to be some other reason.” “This phenomenon is called 'well seiche'; the reason could be distant seismic activity or pressure changes. The groundwater level is rising rapidly because of excessive rains, causing water movements,” another explained.
What Did Experts Find?
Given the sensitivity of the matter, the Morbi district geology team immediately arrived at the scene and began a preliminary investigation. Geologist Jagdish Wadher explained the real reason behind this incident, stating that recent heavy rainfall is causing massive groundwater recharge.
Additionally, air traps in the lower water table and the presence of a well along the roadside are causing the fluctuations in the water level due to strong winds.
The geologist clarified that he had also contacted the Seismological Research Institute, which completely ruled out any seismic activity or active fault in the area.

Collector Appeals To Avoid Rumours
District Collector Swapnil Khare has made a special appeal to the public to stop the fear and rumours spreading on social media and locally regarding this incident. He urged people not to believe or spread any rumours.
According to administrative officials, a special team from the Groundwater Department will soon visit the site and submit its final report. For now, there's no need for residents to panic or worry.
