A married couple from Haryana's Gurugram shared a harrowing ordeal of an in vitro fertilisation (IVF) experience which traumatised them for a lifetime. Rahul Rathore and his wife claimed that one of their newborn twins is not their biological child.
How Did The Matter Escalate
The story started last year when the Gurugram couple were trying to have a baby using IVF. Taking the gynaecologist's suggestion, they went to a known IVF hospital for treatment. All procedures, including collecting samples and placing embryos, were finished without any hitch. On May 14, 2025, the embryos were implanted into the woman's womb. She gave birth to twin daughters in January this year.
However, the couple started developing suspicion over the younger twin. The girl child did not bear any resemblance to either of the parents. The younger child in fact bore northeastern traits. As their suspicion grew, the couple decided to take a DNA test. The results revealed a shocking reality; it said that the baby was not biologically theirs, the couple told India Today in an interview.
The couple alleged that their samples might be possibly misplaced or changed with those of another couple. The matter soon turned to a legal battle after Rahul’s appeals to administrative authorities were met with persistent police inaction. The couple claimed that police did not register a case when they approached them with a complaint of a possible mismatch.
The cops, after three months, registered a complaint on March 31 after the court's intervention. On June 5, the court ordered the police to seize all relevant documents, including embryology sheets, from the IVF centre. The couple urged the cops to seize all the documents and find out where their babies are.
During the interview, the couple alleged that they do not have grudges against the hospital; they just want to know about the babies.
Mother Is Traumatised
The experience has caused extreme physical and psychological trauma. "This was my third caesarean surgery," she recounted, reflecting on the trauma of being summoned to the police station just days after her delivery. She described being forced to sit for hours, only for her complaint to be disregarded.
The depression has led to memory loss for the couple. The long wait has shattered them, leaving the duo desperate for resolution.
