The Haryana Mass Rapid Transport Corporation (HMRTC) has announced plans to construct a double-decker structure for the Sector 56-Panchgaon metro corridor, which would run above a proposed elevated road on the Southern Peripheral Road (SPR). Officials said the plan aims to prevent congestion, minimise duplicate infrastructure, and protect valuable space on this busy corridor.

Speaking to Hindustan Times, officials involved in the project have warned that constructing separate elevated structures, one for the metro and one for the road, could create decades of traffic bottlenecks. “Building independently would lock the corridor forever,” said a senior HMRTC official, citing concerns over excessive piers, reduced road capacity, visual clutter, and limited space for future upgrades.

Double-Decker Viaduct On Gurugram’s SPR

The HMRTC has proposed a shared double-decker viaduct, with one deck carrying the metro line and the other carrying an elevated road, both supported on common piers, offering a more sustainable solution for a rapidly growing city already struggling with limited right-of-way.

For the shared double-decker viaduct, the HMRTC has identified the stretch between Ghata Chowk and Vatika Chowk as the most feasible location, where the planned metro alignment overlaps with an already approved elevated road project on the Southern Peripheral Road (SPR).

To ensure that the two structures can be safely and efficiently stacked, the corporation has sought a detailed technical feasibility study from RITES, the government-owned engineering consultancy.

The Sector 56-Panchgaon metro is planned to be an elevated corridor, with its Detailed Project Report (DPR) ready and awaiting official approval. At the same time, the Haryana government has given a green signal for the construction of a new flyover along the same section of the Southern Peripheral Road (SPR), creating potential overlap between the two projects.

HMRTC officials said both projects are crucial for Gurugram’s growing mobility needs, but carrying them out separately could create decades of traffic bottlenecks. “A double-decker viaduct allows us to meet today’s demand without sacrificing tomorrow’s options,” Times Now quoted an HMRTC official as saying.
