Heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh has disrupted normal life, with several areas facing traffic congestion, road blockages, power outages, and landslides. Amid the monsoon conditions and a decline in tourist arrivals, the Kalka-Shimla Summer Special Train service will be discontinued from July 16.
The special train was introduced during the summer tourism season to accommodate the increased number of visitors travelling to Shimla and ease pressure on regular train services. However, with the peak tourist period now over and passenger demand declining during the rainy season, the railway has decided to withdraw the additional service.
After the discontinuation of the Summer Special Train, five regular trains will continue to operate daily on the Kalka-Shimla UNESCO World Heritage railway route.
Special Service Ran for Two Months
Shimla witnesses a significant rise in tourist arrivals during May and June every year. To manage the additional rush of passengers, the railway operates special train services during this period. The Kalka-Shimla Summer Special Train provided an alternative travel option for thousands of tourists this year.
Railway officials said that tourist movement usually declines during the monsoon season, reducing the need for additional train services. As a result, operating the special train beyond the peak season is not considered necessary. Regular train services, however, will continue according to the existing schedule.
Service Could Return During Winter Tourism Season
The railway reviews passenger demand and operational requirements regularly. If there is sufficient demand, the Summer Special Train service may be introduced again during the upcoming winter tourism season.
