Jagran correspondent, Manali: A cloudburst in Himachal Pradesh's Lahaul-Spiti triggered flash floods that once again washed away the temporary bridge over the Dhondhal drain in Mayad Valley. While the Public Works Department (PWD) has cleared the road for traffic, commuters are currently navigating dangerous water crossings to get across.
To manage emergencies, heavy machinery is deployed on-site and a temporary ropeway swing has also been installed.
'Years Of Hard Work Swept Away Daily': Lahaul-Spiti MLA
Speaking to Jagran.com, Lahaul-Spiti MLA Anuradha Rana revealed that eight to ten bridges, both small and large, have been washed away in the Dhondhal drain over the years. Since June of this year, every local drain in the valley has been overflowing relentlessly, exacerbating the problems of the villagers.
Rana emphasised that she is personally monitoring and assessing the situation on the ground. She noted that while the Public Works Department (PWD) is working day and night to restore access, cloudbursts and floods keep sweeping away their hard work every day.
State Government Approves Construction Of Large Bridge In Lahaul-Spiti
Lahaul-Spiti MLA Rana stated that the state government is continuously working toward a permanent solution to the recurring bridge washouts. The government has already approved the construction of a large bridge at the location, with paperwork currently underway. Work on the project is scheduled to begin later this year.
