New Delhi | Jagran News Desk: Stone pelting between two groups was reported in Maujpur area of east Delhi on Sunday evening near the anti-CAA protest site of Jaffrabad, where around 500 people were demonstrating from last night against the contentious Citizenship Act, inspired by the Shaheen Bagh protests in south-east Delhi.

The police, who have gathered at the spot in large numbers along with para-military personnel reportedly resorted to firing tear gas shells to disperse the crowd and took control of the situation.

Following the clash between the two groups, the DMRC has also closed the entry and exit points of Babarpur-Maujpur metro stations.

After the clashes took place, the police said that stones were pelted at the personnel present there to control the situation. However, the situation was brought under control. Alok Kumar, Joint Commissioner of Police (Eastern Range) as reported by news agency ANI said, "Stones were also pelted at the police, the situation has been brought under control. Adequate personnel have been deployed and are conducting flag marches".

An anti-CAA protest by around 500 people, mostly women, near the Jaffrabad metro station in northeast Delhi continued on Sunday. The protest began on Saturday night, blocking a road which connects Seelampur with Maujpur and Yamuna Vihar.

The demonstrators, inspired by Shaheen Bagh protesters, were seen carrying tricolour and raised slogans of ‘Aazadi’ and ‘Jai Bhim’. The protesters demanded that the government should immediately revoke the CAA.

The protesters have blocked road No. 66 which connects Seelampur to Maujpur and Yamuna Vihar. The Jaffrabad metro station has also been closed due to the protests. “Security Update: Entry and exit of Jaffrabad have been closed. Trains will not be halting at this station,” the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) said in a tweet this morning.

Looking at the situation, the administration has deployed heavy security in the region.

One of the protesters, Shadab, said that the demonstrations is against CAA and NRC, adding that the protesters are also seeking reservations for Dalits.

“We have blocked the road in order to protest and we will not move from the site till the Centre revokes the draconian law,” Shadab, quoted by news agency IANS, said.

Meanwhile, social activist Faheem Baig, quoted by news agency PTI, said that there is a resentment within the people against the way the government is handling the issue.

This is not the first time when protests have broke out at Jaffrabad. In December last year, thousands of protesters holding placards and national flags gathered at Jaffrabad metro station raised slogans against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

The protests at Delhi’s Jaffrabad have resumed at a time when efforts are being made to clear a road blocked by anti-CAA protesters at Shaheen Bagh.

The protesters have been staging a sit-in at Shaheen Bagh for over two months, blocking the road connecting southeast Delhi and Noida. The Supreme Court had on Monday appointed interlocutors in an attempt to reach out to the anti-CAA protesters.
