The DGCA issued its latest directive just hours after forming an eight-member oversight team, as IndiGo remains under pressure following thousands of cancellations linked to the new crew rostering rule. During a PIL hearing, the Delhi High Court criticised the Centre for delayed intervention, citing heavy economic losses and inconvenience to passengers.

IndiGo’s Chairman and Non-Executive Independent Director, Vikram Singh Mehta, has issued a public apology after a week of severe disruptions across the airline’s network.

In a video statement shared on Wednesday (December 10), Mehta acknowledged the extensive cancellations, delays and inconvenience faced by passengers. He admitted that the airline had fallen short in its operations and communication, and emphasised that IndiGo is working urgently to address the issues and restore normalcy.

IndiGo has sent its updated winter flight schedule to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) after being instructed to cut its operations by 10 per cent. The regulator had asked the airline to file the revised plan by 5 pm on Wednesday.

According to a source quoted by PTI, IndiGo complied with the directive and submitted the modified schedule as required.

Senior DGCA officials will conduct on-site inspections at 11 domestic airports over the next two to three days to review IndiGo’s operations amid ongoing disruptions. The selected airports include Nagpur, Jaipur, Bhopal, Surat, Tirupati, Vijayawada, Shirdi, Cochin, Lucknow, Amritsar and Dehradun.

According to the DGCA’s directive, each designated officer must complete inspections at their assigned airport within the stipulated timeframe.

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday slammed the centre by asking why the other airlines raised the prices during the IndiGo crisis. The centre stated that the airlines have been directed to regularise the operation by following the latest changes. 

IndiGo has cancelled over 200 flights on Wednesday amid the ongoing crisis. However, the airline has assured that the services will be back to normal.

Flight operations at Jammu Airport have remained stable and minimally affected during the recent IndiGo flight cancellations and delays reported across the country, a senior official said on Wednesday.

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday questioned the central government as to why the situation was allowed to precipitate into a crisis following the cancellation of IndiGo flights, with lakhs of passengers stranded and other airlines charging hefty fares. The high court said that besides the trouble and harassment caused to the passengers, the question is of the losses caused to the country's economy.

Delhi's trade, industry, tourism and exhibition sectors have suffered an estimated loss of Rs 1000 crore due to widespread flight cancellations by IndiGo, which disrupted the movement of visitors, a statement by the Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) claimed on Wednesday. CTI, an umbrella body for Delhi's market associations, reported a 25 per cent drop in footfall at major markets across the city over the past ten days.

Amid IndiGo's nationwide flight cancellation fiasco, the situation at the Jay Prakash Narayan International Airport (JPNI) in Patna is "normal", and all concerns of the affected passengers were addressed, a senior official claimed on Wednesday.

Ten flights to and fro Patna have been cancelled on Wednesday, Airport Director Chandra Pratap Dwivedi said, without elaborating whether all these cancelled flights were of IndiGo only.

IndiGo on Wednesday cancelled nearly 220 flights at three major airports, including Delhi and Mumbai, despite Chief Executive Officer Pieter Elbers claiming that the airline's operations were back on track.

The Delhi High Court has directed that appropriate measures be taken to ensure the prompt initiation of compensation payments to IndiGo passengers who were stranded at the airport.

ASG Chetan Sharma assured the Delhi High Court that a comprehensive framework is already in place, and emphasised that the government has acted swiftly and decisively, particularly to safeguard senior citizens and medically vulnerable air passengers.

The Chief Justice questioned the government’s oversight, asking why no action was taken despite clear failures and stating, “If they failed, what action did you take? You allowed the situation to reach this point.”

The Delhi High Court was informed by ASG that a show-cause notice had been issued to the airline, which, in its response, had “offered a profuse apology.” He added that the FDTL scheme had been pending since 2024 due to the airline’s repeated requests for extensions and ongoing assurances before the single judge.

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday sharply pulled up the Centre and concerned authorities over the ongoing IndiGo chaos, questioning how such a situation could have arisen. The Bench asked, “Why did such a situation even precipitate? What steps were taken to assist passengers?” It further sought a detailed explanation from the government regarding the arrangements made to manage stranded travellers and ensure they were not harassed at airports.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has ordered immediate on-site inspections at 11 airports following widespread flight disruptions caused by IndiGo.

In response, ASG Chetan Sharma, citing relevant documents, told the Delhi High Court that the “statutory mechanism is totally in place.” He explained that the Centre had been planning to implement the FDTL for some time, but the airline had requested extensions for the July and November phases before the single judge. “This is the first time the Ministry has intervened. We have capped the fares; this cap itself is a stringent regulatory action,” he added.

The Delhi High Court raised serious concerns over the sharp surge in airfares, pointing out that tickets which were earlier available for Rs 5,000 had escalated to Rs 30,000–35,000. The Bench questioned how other airlines could exploit the situation, asking, “If there were a crisis, how could other airlines be allowed to take advantage? How can fares jump to Rs 35,000–39,000? How could other carriers start charging these amounts? How can this happen?” The court’s remarks highlighted the need for accountability and regulatory oversight amid the ongoing disruptions in air travel.

The Delhi High Court takes exception to the increased airfares by other airlines as passengers remain stranded amid the IndiGo crisis. "How could other airlines take advantage of situation, charge hefty sums for tickets," it asks.

The Delhi High Court today heared a petition seeking directions to the Centre to support people affected by IndiGo flight cancellations.

Crisis-hit airlines IndiGo continues to cancel flights today. As many as 61 flights stand cancelled from Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport (KIG) on Wednesday. These include 35 arrivals and 26 departures.

IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers said the airline is “back on its feet” with stable operations, noting that lakhs of customers have already received full refunds, with more processed daily. He added that most stranded bags have been delivered to passengers’ homes and customer needs continue to be addressed. Elbers said IndiGo has resumed flights to all 138 destinations in its network and is fully cooperating with the government. He added that the airline has begun reviewing the causes of the disruption, the lessons to be learned, and ways to emerge stronger.

IndiGo has cancelled a total of 152 flights at Delhi Airport so far, including 76 departures and 76 arrivals.

Addressing concerns over widespread IndiGo flight cancellations, Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu told the Lok Sabha that the government is committed to making India’s aviation system more competitive and robust. He added that policies are being implemented to encourage new airlines, aiming to improve connectivity, affordability, and passenger comfort.

Chennai International Airport continues to witness stranded IndiGo passengers as flight disruptions and cancellations persist, causing inconvenience and delays for travelers at the busy airport.

Union Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu stated that operations are stabilising quickly, safety standards remain fully in force, and IndiGo is being held accountable. He added that passengers’ convenience and dignity are being protected, while long-term measures are underway to make India’s aviation sector more passenger-centric.

Speaking in the Lok Sabha on the IndiGo crisis, Union Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu stated that IndiGo disruptions are stabilising while all other airlines continue to operate smoothly nationwide, with airports reporting normal conditions and no crowding. Refunds, baggage tracing, and passenger support remain under Ministry supervision. The DGCA has issued show-cause notices to IndiGo’s senior leadership and launched a detailed enforcement investigation, with strict action to follow based on the findings. The Minister emphasized that no airline, regardless of size, will be allowed to cause passenger hardship through planning failures or non-compliance.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has reduced IndiGo’s daily flight operations by 5 percent. With the airline operating around 2,300 flights a day, this translates to a cut of approximately 115 flights. Sources said IndiGo has been informed of the decision, and the specific flights to be withdrawn are being finalized to ensure minimal disruption to route connectivity. Officials added that an additional 5 percent reduction may be considered in the coming days, depending on the airline’s ability to maintain its scheduled operations.

At Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, IndiGo has cancelled a total of 31 flights today, affecting 14 arrivals and 17 departures.

At Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi, IndiGo passengers continue to be stranded due to ongoing flight disruptions and cancellations.

IndiGo has cancelled a total of 58 flights today at Hyderabad Airport, affecting 14 arrivals and 44 departures.

Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu will address the Lok Sabha at 12 PM today regarding the ongoing IndiGo crisis, a day after he discussed the same issue in the Rajya Sabha.

IndiGo has cancelled 16 flights today (9 arrivals and 7 departures) at Ahemdabad airport. A total of 23 flights have operated till 8:00 AM (7 arrivals and 16 departures). There are no issues reported in the terminal or airside, and passenger facilitation is being efficiently managed.

The Civil Aviation Secretary said things are almost back to normal. IndiGo flew 1,800+ flights today; other airlines, Akasa, Air India Express, Air India, SpiceJet, operated full capacity. 90 percent of baggage has arrived, with remaining deliveries expected within 24 hours. 100 percent refunds completed; airfare capped at Rs 7,500-18,000. Inquiry ordered, IndiGo senior management showed cause; detailed report expected in 15 days for corrective action.

Samir Kumar Sinha, Secretary of the Ministry of Civil Aviation, said, "In my opinion, the worst days were 4th and 5th December. After that, things began to get back on track. We coordinated at various levels, held several meetings with the senior management of IndiGo, and also worked closely with airports and airport directors, both at PPP and AAI-managed airports. Now, I believe things are almost normal."

A passenger at Ahmedabad Airport said, "I had to go to Chennai and booked a round-trip flight. I did not have any issues while returning, but on the outbound leg, my flight was scheduled for 2 AM on 9th December. I received a message that it had been rescheduled to 9 PM. Now I will have to wait here for 12 hours. I have been trying to reach the helpline for two days but have not received a satisfactory response." 

In response to widespread disruptions at airports due to the ongoing operational crisis at IndiGo, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has directed officers at the level of Deputy Secretary, Director, and Joint Secretary to visit all major airports in the coming days to assess the situation on the ground comprehensively. The inspections will cover key airports including Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Pune, Guwahati, Goa, and Thiruvananthapuram.

At Chennai Airport, IndiGo Airlines has cancelled 18 departures and 23 arrivals, causing disruptions for passengers and affecting travel schedules across the airport.

At Kempegowda International Airport, IndiGo flights continue to face disruptions today, with 58 arrivals and 63 departures cancelled. The airport authority, KIAL, has stated that the next update on flight operations will be shared after 6 pm.

At Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad, passengers continue to face disruptions as IndiGo flights experience ongoing cancellations and delays, affecting travel plans across the airport.

Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, Today's IndiGo flight update shows 1 domestic arrival and 3 domestic departures have been cancelled so far, while 3 arrivals and 2 departures have operated as scheduled, according to the Thiruvananthapuram Airport (TRV) PRO.

Speaking at the Delhi airport about IndiGo flight cancellations, Samir Kumar Sinha, Secretary of the Ministry of Civil Aviation said, "Things are almost back to normal. Airlines have been performing. In fact, the operations have been very smooth. IndiGo has flown more than 1,800 flights today, which is almost normal. All the other airlines, like Akasa, Air India Express, Air India, Spicejet, have flown their full capacity. So things are getting back to normal as I see today."

Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, speaking to DD News on the IndiGo crisis, says, "DGCA needs more teeth. It already has some, but to reach global standards and prevent such incidents, we will revisit rules and guidelines. I will take responsibility for revisiting passenger rights and ensuring they are protected during daily operations as well as during crises."

DGCA needs more teeth

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has received IndiGo’s response to the Show Cause Notice issued in connection with the recent large-scale operational disruptions. In its response, the Airline said that it is "profusely apologetic" and deeply regrets the inconvenience and hardship caused to customers. They attribute the disruption to the "compounding effect of multiple factors," which operated in an "unfortunate and unforeseeable confluence.

On being asked if there was a delay from the government to swing into action amid IndiGo flight cancellations, Samir Kumar Sinha, Secretary of the Ministry of Civil Aviation, says, "Not at all. On the 3rd, when we got to know, immediately we held meetings, and thereafter we coordinated with the airlines and also with the airports and other airlines, and thereafter everything has been smooth. The recovery has been very quick. We have also put fare caps. Airfare has been capped at Rs 18,000. It starts from Rs 7500 for up to 500 kilometres, and beyond 1500 kilometres, it is Rs 18000..."

In a fresh announcement, IndiGo said that it will fully refund money for flights cancelled between December 3 and December 15 amid the ongoing operational crisis. 

Moody’s, a Credit rating agency, has slammed IndiGo’s recent flight disruptions, saying the airline failed to plan for aviation regulations that had been known well in advance. The agency has flagged IndiGo as credit negative.

According to the Aviation Ministry, the domestic carrier has delivered a total of 4500 luggage to their addresses and will deliver the remaining 4500 in the next 36 hours. Additionally, the airline has cancelled a total of 9,55,591 PNRs and refunded Rs 827 crores from November 21 to December 7. 

IndiGo faces passengers' anger over delays in finding and delivering baggage. Social media is flooded with videos and photos documenting the piles of luggage at airports. A Passenger on social media claimed that the airline flew him to a city while delivering his baggage to another. 

IndiGo issued a fresh statement on Monday, stating that its Crisis Management Group (CMG) is closely monitoring the ongoing situation. The airline's top priorities are to restore 100% per cent operational capacity, ensure a timely flow of information, and fast-track customer refunds and flight rescheduling.

Authorities stated that a fresh operational update regarding the ongoing flight disruptions will be issued after 6 PM today. Till then, passengers are advised to check their flight status before travelling to the airport to avoid inconvenience. 

Guests who booked Air India flights in Economy Class during the transition period (the time while the new caps were being applied across all booking systems) are eligible for a refund of the differential amounts. The booking must have been made at a base fare above the newly prescribed caps.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has sharply criticised the large-scale IndiGo flight cancellations, describing the situation as a "disaster" that has left thousands of passengers "mentally tortured" at airports. " What is the alternative for the public? It is most unfortunate that the maximum number of flights have stopped. This is a disaster. Thousands of passengers are stranded in airports. They are feeling mentally tortured. I ask the Government of India to make a plan to resolve this. The BJP government is not interested in matters related to the country and the people. But the BJP cares only about how to capture institutions," she told ANI.

Shares of InterGlobe Aviation Limited, the company that operates India’s largest airline IndiGo, dropped sharply by as much as 7.6 per cent on Monday, marking the seventh consecutive day of decline and wiping out an estimated $4.3 billion from its market value. The sell-off was triggered after the civil aviation regulator (DGCA) issued a show-cause notice demanding an explanation from CEO Pieter Elbers for the massive travel disruptions last week. 

Air India has capped its flight ticket prices in line with a government mandate to monitor airfares. The airline is proactively offering refunds to Economy Class passengers who booked tickets above the newly prescribed limits during the recent transition. This ensures that no passenger pays more than the capped fare.

Over 400 IndiGo flights were cancelled on Monday, December 8, at Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai and other airports. Delhi and Bengaluru airports were among the worst-hit, with 134 and 127 flight cancellations, news agency ANI reported. 

Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport reported 134 cancellations, with 75 departures and 59 arrivals. At Bengaluru Airport, 127 IndiGo flights were cancelled, which included 65 arrivals and 62 departures.

The Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has issued a show-cause notice to IndiGo, demanding that CEO Pieter Elbers explain the widespread cancellations. However, the DGCA granted a one-time 24-hour extension to submit its response to the notice. 

India's biggest airline, IndiGo, is grappling with a major crisis, having cancelled over 4,500 flights since last Tuesday. The disruption, which entered its seventh consecutive day on Monday, is primarily attributed to a pilot shortage following the implementation of Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) rules. 

The Supreme Court declined to intervene immediately, stating that the Government of India has already taken cognisance of the issue and is addressing the widespread cancellations and delays that have left many passengers stranded across the country. 

Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court has agreed to list the matter on Wednesday, news agency PTI reported.

A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed before the Delhi High Court seeking relief for passengers impacted by the widespread IndiGo flight crisis. The Delhi High Court is scheduled to hear the matter on Wednesday, December 10, 2025.

IndiGo's operational crisis continued on Monday, with more than 400 flights cancelled across the country today. Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai were among the worst-hit.

In a statement released Sunday, the airline assured passengers that it expects operations to stabilise by December 10.

Chief Justice of India Surya Kant said, "We understand that lakhs of people might be facing issues and are in difficulty. But the Union of India seems to have taken some steps. They have acted proactively. Let them handle the situation."

The Supreme Court on Monday declined to grant an urgent hearing on the "IndiGo crisis" Public Interest Litigation (PIL), which sought immediate judicial intervention over the cancellation of nearly 1,000 flights nationwide.

Filed by lawyer Narendra Mishra, the plea was declined after the Court noted that the government had already taken cognisance of the massive disruption, Times Now reported.

A total of 134 IndiGo flights were cancelled at Delhi's IGI Airport on Monday, airport officials reported. The cancellations comprised 75 departures and 59 arrivals.

18 IndiGo flights, including nine arrivals and nine departures, were cancelled at the Ahmedabad airport by 8 AM, news agency ANI reported.

IndiGo flight disruption crisis continued on Monday, with a total of 127 flights cancelled at Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport (KIA).

This total included 65 arrivals and 62 departures, according to airport officials.

Hyderabad's Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) on Monday recorded a total of 77 IndiGo flight cancellations. These cancellations included 38 scheduled arrivals and 39 scheduled departures being impacted, airport authorities told ANI.

The Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) in Delhi on Monday issued a fresh passenger advisory stating that its operations are mostly running smoothly. However, the airport also added that some flights may be rescheduled or cancelled due to operational reasons.

Passengers are advised to check their current flight status with the airline before heading to the airport to ensure a smoother travel experience and prevent unnecessary inconvenience.

Over 300 IndiGo flights have been cancelled today.
