Jagran Correspondent | South Delhi: Students at Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) staged a late-night protest on Friday over unhygienic food served in the J&K Girls Hostel mess, alleging they found insects and flies in their meals.
The university students, including the AISA representatives, then started a demonstration near the Centenary Gate. Staging the protest, the students alleged that the case is not an isolated one and that several hostel messes on the campus have been serving unhygienic food for a long time.
What Are Their Demands?
During the protest, the Jamia students put forward four demands, including the cancellation of the current vendor’s contract, recruiting female staff in the J&K Hostel mess, resignation of the provost and warden, and a written assurance that protesting students will not face targeting or alleged "witch-hunting".
Students also allege that the same vendor has continued to receive contracts since 2023 despite earlier complaints and protests. They also stated that some residents faced harassment after raising concerns about the dining service.
What did the police say?
As the police officials reached the campus, they dispersed the crowd gathered outside. According to the police, female students were staging a sit-in protest inside the Centenary Gate, alleging that the canteen food contained insects. A crowd of male students had gathered outside the gate to support them. Police arrived at the scene and dispersed the crowd, while the female students continued their protest.

Previously, around 50 to 60 students of Jamia Millia Islamia’s Ambedkar Hostel held a protest over contaminated food served in the mess. They alleged that they are being served poor-quality food. The assistant commissioner of police and the local SHO are at the spot, a senior officer said.
