The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced on Tuesday that by-elections for two Lok Sabha constituencies, Wayanad and Nanded, will be held in November. Voting in the Wayanad constituency in Kerala is scheduled for November 13, while Nanded in Maharashtra will vote on November 20. The results for both constituencies will be declared on November 23.

The Wayanad seat was vacated by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who chose to retain Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh after winning both constituencies in the recent Lok Sabha elections. Later, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra announced her candidature from the constituency. 

Nanded, along with Basirhat in West Bengal, are the other Lok Sabha seats that remain vacant in the lower house of the parliament. The ECI announced the dates for the Nanded Lok Sabha constituency while the date for the Basirhat Lok Sabha seat has not been announced yet.

These by-polls coincide with assembly elections in Maharashtra and Jharkhand, where the legislative terms end on November 26 and January 5, respectively. Elections for 48 other assembly constituencies will also be conducted alongside these polls.

This will mark the second major electoral event since the general elections, following the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) unexpected third consecutive win in Haryana. The Haryana polls were held alongside elections in Jammu & Kashmir, where the National Conference-led alliance secured a major victory.
