Mahendra Singh Mewar, a prominent member of the Mewar royal family and former Member of Parliament from Chittorgarh, passed away at the age of 83 on Sunday night. He breathed his last at Ananta Medical College in Udaipur, Rajasthan, after battling a prolonged decline in health. His death marks the end of a significant chapter in the history of Mewar's royal lineage and public life.
Mewar, the father-in-law of Rajsamand MP Mahima Kumari and the father of Nathdwara MLA Vishwajit Singh was a prominent figure whose passing left a deep sense of grief across the region.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his condolences on the death of Mahendra Singh Mewar, saying that he worked tirelessly to preserve and promote the heritage of Rajasthan.
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Mahendra Singh Mewar, a former Member of Parliament from Chittorgarh and a member of the Mewar royal family, who made invaluable contributions to social and political life. Throughout his life, he worked tirelessly to preserve and promote the heritage of Rajasthan,” PM Modi wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
“He dedicated himself completely to the service of the people. His efforts towards social welfare will always remain an inspiration. In this time of grief, I express my condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti!” he further added.
Mahendra Singh Mewar was a descendant of Maharana Pratap, the 16th-century Rajput ruler of Mewar who reigned until his death in 1597. In 1989, he was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Chittorgarh constituency on a BJP ticket.
Taking to X, formerly Twitter, former Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje expressed grief over Mewar’s demise and said, “The news of the demise of Maharana Saheb Mahendra Singh Ji Mewar of the former Mewar royal family is extremely sad. My condolences are with the bereaved family in this difficult time of grief. I pray to God to grant the departed soul a place in his feet and give strength to the bereaved family to bear this lightning strike.”
