Mumbai Local Train Services: Following the murder of Mayank Lohar on a moving local train in Borivali, the Mumbai Railway Police has taken a significant decision to prioritise the safety of passengers. The Railways banned the carrying of sharp weapons or tools on local trains. The Railway Police appealed to those who use such tools to keep them at their workplaces and not carry them while travelling.
According to the Railway Police, millions of passengers travel daily on the Mumbai local trains. During rush hour, there is a risk of accidents or misuse of sharp objects. Keeping safety in mind, the authorities banned the sharp tools and other items.
Several Professionals Likely To Be Affected?
Fish vendors, daily wage labourers, carpenters, blacksmiths, construction workers, and many other professionals who use knives, cutters, sickles, or other sharp tools are likely to be affected. The Railway Police appealed to them to refrain from carrying these tools while travelling and, if possible, to keep them at their workplace.
The police clarified that the decision is not aimed at any particular class or profession, but rather as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of all passengers.
Medical Students May Be Exempted
Students pursuing medical education are required to carry surgical instruments or dissection kits for their studies and practicals. The Railway Police and related departments are considering granting such students limited exemptions based on valid identification and need.
Earlier, a 22-year-old, Mayank Lohar, was stabbed to death inside a moving Mumbai local train on June 23, 2026, prompting authorities to increase safety measures in the trains. The murder sparked widespread public outrage over commuter safety on Mumbai trains.
