Five security personnel were injured in an attack by a violent mob on the Meghalaya Chief Minister's Office in Tura over demands for the establishment of a winter capital in the city. The visuals shared by ANI on Twitter showed multiple security personnel being treated for injuries inside what is assumed to be the Meghalaya CMO building. According to reports, Section 144 has been imposed in Tura after the incident.
Following the incident, Meghalaya CM issued a statement and said, "The incident that took place today in Tura outside the CM Secretariat, is indeed very unfortunate...while discussions were almost over...we heard some agitation from outside...and it seems that the pelting of stones was initiated by people who were not part of the agitating groups...Necessary action will be taken from the police side. I have decided that I'll be giving Rs 50,000 as a medical allowance to all those people who were injured & all the expenditure will be borne by the government..."
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma was learnt to be unharmed. According to reports, CM Sangma was in the middle of a meeting with various civil groups regarding the winter capital demand when the chaos broke out. A crowd in large number allegedly gathered outside the CMO in Tura and started pelting stones, India Today said in its report about the incident. The police then retaliated by firing tear gas shells to disburse the crowd.
