Alexandr Wang: Not every genius mind needs a tragic backstory or a tale of overcoming poverty to prove their brilliance. Some extraordinary innovators launch into greatness from raw intellect and fierce ambition. Alexandr Wang, Chief AI Officer at Meta, is a prime example of this, proving that not all extraordinary stories need a dramatic struggle against all odds.
Wang's journey is all about seizing the opportunity, from dropping out of MIT at 19 and co-founding Scale AI and eventually becoming the world's youngest self-made billionaire. He was born in Los Alamos, New Mexico, in January 1997, to Chinese immigrants who worked as physicists at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico.

Wang's interest in Maths and Computer Programming peaked at an early age. He qualified for the Math Olympiad Program in 2013, the US Physics Team in 2014, and was a USACO finalist in 2012 and 2013. Before moving to Silicon Valley, he joined fintech Addepar and then the question-and-answer site Quora management company.

Wang Co-founded Scale AI At 19
At the age of 19, when most of the teenagers are navigating exam pressure and figuring out their basic career path, Wang rewrote the future of Artificial Intelligence. After a small stint at MIT in 2016 with Lucy Guo, he co-founded Scale AI after recognising that there is a desperate need for precise data to train artificial intelligence that no one had explored yet.
Trusted by industry giants like Meta, OpenAI, and Microsoft, as well as the US Department of Defence, the company bridges the gap between raw information and highly capable, safety-tested production AI models. It specialises in Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF) and automated tools to clean, categorize, and refine raw data.

Alexandr Wang, at 24, became the world's youngest self-made billionaire. He held the title until October 2025 through the meteoric rise of Scale AI. For years, financial publications such as Forbes put him on a pedestal for modern entrepreneurial youth. He showed that youth can easily command the AI economy, cementing his position in the history of Silicon Valley.

Road To Meta's Chief AI Officer
In June 2025, Meta invested about USD 14.3 billion in Scale AI, acquiring 49% of the company. The investment led to Wang's entry into Meta, where he took the Chief AI Officer post. Stepping into a new role, Wang took command of Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL). With this monumental shift from a startup founder to a senior role at a global tech powerhouse, Wang cemented his authority in shaping the future of AI products.
