ASI Harjeet Singh Murder: In the latest updates on the killing of ASI Harjeet Singh, the Punjab Police gunned down one of the suspects during the late hours of Saturday, while the other escaped in the darkness in Amritsar. Suspect Deepak Singh sustained gunfire injuries and was declared dead on arrival at the hospital. Singh was allegedly linked to Pakistan-based terrorist Shahzad Bhatti and his terror module.

According to Amritsar Commissioner of Police Harmanbir Singh Gill, two suspects were warned to stop at a naka at around 10.25 pm; however, they opened fire and ran towards another naka. In the next naka, the two parties opened fire, and Deepak suffered severe injuries while the other fled. Police recovered a 30-bore pistol, two magazines, eight live cartridges, a mobile phone and an Activa scooter allegedly used in the crime.

Pakistan-Based Terrorist Links

Gill said that a man based in Pakistan lured the two for money and involvement in the narcotics business. The unidentified person then tasked the two with killing a police official and recording the act.

According to Gill, the attackers killed Harjit Singh as per the instructions and then filmed the incident and sent it to the handler. He said the video could be recovered during forensic examination of the accused's mobile phones.

The police further claimed that the accused, Deepak Singh, was in contact with Shahzad Bhatti, who allegedly operates under the name Tehreek-e-Taliban Hindustan (TTH).

Recently, the Ministry of Home Affairs has designated Shahzad Bhatti as a terrorist and his network as a terrorist organisation. Police are also examining alleged links between Bhatti's network and earlier target killings of Punjab Police personnel.

ASI Harjeet Singh was allegedly attacked by two motorcycle-borne individuals while being on a PCR duty on September 18. The two followed him and opened fire at him at the Gate No. 2 of the Bhagtanwala Grain Market in Amritsar. Singh suffered a fatal gunshot injury and later died. Police have been examining CCTV footage and telecom data as part of the investigation into the killing.
