A female lawyer from Assam had alleged that she was assaulted by a group of people in Delhi over a property dispute in central Delhi’s Prasad Nagar area. In a video, she is seen bursting into tears and saying that she was beaten by people in the presence of police officials. The woman reportedly said that he was targetted as an “outsider”.
The woman said that during the dispute, the rival group used racist slurs against her. The Assam woman who is representing an individual, identified as “Dollar Baba”, said that she has filed a complaint of sexual assault. The police said they will file a first information report (FIR).
What does she say in the video?
In the video, she had broken down, saying, "They can act like goons here because everyone here is a local, and since I am an outsider, their main goal was to get me out first," the lawyer, whose hometown is in Assam, said, surrounded by the police.
"You tell me yourself, how can I leave my client and abandon my duty? Why was I beaten? I just want to know this much," she said.
"Any goon can enter anywhere and start beating people. The police only keep watching and do nothing. This is how safe Delhi is. The chief minister is a woman. They say, get your daughters educated.' Of what use is that if she gets no protection?" the lawyer said.
What did the police say?
According to police officials, the woman has filed a complaint alleging that she was molested during the incident. Police said they are registering an FIR based on her complaint under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
A parallel complaint has also been filed by the other group involved in the property dispute. The complaint alleges assault, following which a cross-FIR has been registered against the first group, police said. Further investigation is underway
