A disturbing video circulated on social media showed a young couple being publicly harassed and humiliated at night in Bihar’s Jamui. The video shows one of the men attempting to grab the woman from behind and take her away. Bihar Police has taken cognisance of the incident and directed Jamui Police to investigate the matter. The identities of the people seen in the video and other details surrounding the alleged incident have not been established.

What does the video show?

The now-viral video shows a group of men surrounding a young couple at a location during the night. The woman is seen being confronted by several men, while the man accompanying her appears to be separated from her during the confrontation. At one point, a person whose face is covered appears to move towards the woman and tries to take her away. The woman can be heard screaming and appears to resist. The man also attempts to intervene as the situation escalates.

Another video shows the duo on a scooter at a different location. The group appears to confront them again, following which an argument takes place. The couple are later seen apparently pleading with the men before leaving the spot. The sequence of events and what led to the confrontation remain unclear.

What Happened At The Site?

The young dup was travelling in the area through their scooter when a group of six to seven men blocked them. The men stopped their vehicle and started to humiliate them, few hurled abuses against the minors. The girl pleaded with folded hands and asked for mercy, however, the situation then turned worse. 

The female minor was taken separate and confronted. One of the men dragged her from behind and touched her inappropriately. One of them filmed the entire incident and circulated the video on social media. 

How did the police react?

As the video sparked controversy, the police took suo motu cognizance of the matter on the instructions of District Magistrate Naveen, contacted the victims and registered an FIR. DM Naveen contacted the victims and and recorded their statements.  formal FIR has subsequently been registered at the Sadar police station under the POCSO Act and relevant non-bailable sections of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC). Further probe would be continued, respecting the privacy of the minors.

The incident soon grabbed the netizens' reaction. Many demanded action against the individuals and urged the Bihar police to punish them. A user said, "Law and order isn't quite like that, people commit rape, murders and get out scot-free, These people know that no one will do anything to them. Keep your safety in your own hands - and openly be just as ignorant as these folks are. Only then will you be able to stay in India otherwise get out of here."
