Bypolls Election Voting: The by-elections will be held today for five assembly seats and a Lok Sabha seat across three states and a Union Territory. Polling will take place in Rejinagar and Nandigram assembly seats in Bengal, Madurantakam and Dharapuram in Tamil Nadu, Thattanchavady in Puducherry, and Nagaon Lok Sabha seat in Assam. The by-election is being closely watched as it will be the first major test for the newly elected governments in Tamil Nadu and Bengal. The result for the bypolls will be announced on October 9.

Battle Of Prestige In Bengal

Earlier in May, the BJP registered a massive victory by winning over 200 seats of the total 294 against the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC). While the Nandigram seat was vacated by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, the Rejinagar constituency was vacated by the TMC rebel leader Humayun Kabir. While the bypolls are crucial for the ruling party, it will also be a first major test for former CM Mamata Banerjee after she lost the polls and faced large-scale rebellion.

In Nandigram, Banerjee extended support to Congress candidate Milan Pradhan after the candidate fielded by her withdrew. The bypolls are full of challenges for the former CM as the faction led by Ritabrata Banerjee will contest any election. Along with proving her relevance in the state's politics, Banerjee will also try to establish herself as the undisputed boss of the TMC.

CM Vijay's First Litmus Test

The by-election in Madurantakam and Dharapuram seats in the southern state is being conducted after two AIADMK MLAs switched sides with the ruling TVK. The results can change the equation of the state assembly as the CM Vijay-led party fell short of majority in the assembly election earlier this year. While the chief minister has extensively campaigned on both the seats, the DMK, AIADMK, and CPI are also in fray.

The by-election for the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat in Assam is being held following the resignation of former Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi, who joined the BJP in April. Apart from this, the bypolls in Puducherry's Thattanchavady seat is being considered first major test for the four-month-old NDA government.

- Humayun Kabir, the former TMC leader and founder of AJUP, was detained by officials after he voted in Rejinagar. While the exact reason behind his detention is not known yet, the action could have been taken to maintain the law and order.
