Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the Poonamallee-Vadapalani stretch of Chennai Metro Phase 2 on Sunday, October 11, 2026. Built at an estimated cost of Rs 4,900 crore, the newly constructed corridor is expected to significantly enhance connectivity between Chennai's western suburbs and the city centre.

Key Highlights Of The Poonamallee-Vadapalani Stretch

  • The 15-km stretch comprises 11 elevated metro stations and forms a major part of Chennai Metro Phase 2's Corridor 4, also known as the Yellow Line.
  • The corridor includes a 3.7-km double-decker structure and advanced signalling systems to support driverless operations, The Indian Express reported. 
  • The new stretch is expected to reduce travel times and ease daily commuting for residents.

Chennai Metro Phase 2: Check Timings And Frequency

Passenger services on the new stretch will begin at 4:00 PM on Sunday, October 11, running until 9:00 PM. Regular operations will commence on Monday, October 12, running from 7:00 AM to 9:00 PM in both directions, the report added. 

The frequency of services on the Poonamallee Bypass-Vadapalani corridor is based on passenger demand on weekdays and weekends.

Monday To Saturday:

  • Peak Hours (8:00 AM - 11:00 AM and 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM): Trains every 10 minutes.
  • Non-Peak Hours (7:00 AM - 8:00 AM, 11:00 AM - 5:00 PM and 8:00 PM - 9:00 PM): Trains every 15 minutes.

Sundays And Public Holidays:

  • Trains will operate at a frequency of every 15 minutes between 7:00 AM and 9:00 PM, with no separate peak-hour frequency.
