CJP Jantar Mantar Protest: Authorities in the national capital have taken pre-emptive security measures ahead of a proposed protest by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) and other groups on Saturday, October 10, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.
Citing concerns over "unruly mob movement towards sensitive locations", officials have closed entry and exit gates at 45 major metro stations, suspended train services, and shifted classes online across Delhi.
Why Have Restrictions Been Imposed Across Delhi?
The restrictions come in view of a youth-led protest called by CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke, who is demanding the resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
"Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) has been implemented in Central Delhi. Section 163 of the BNSS is essentially the replacement of Section 144 of the CrPC. Under this, authorities may impose temporary restrictions to prevent violence, riots, unlawful assemblies, and other situations that may disturb public order," news agency ANI reported.
Despite the Delhi Police refusing permission for the gathering at Jantar Mantar, Dipke announced plans to proceed with the march.
