Delhi Air Polution: The air quality in Delhi and nearby cities has significantly worsened in the past two days, leading to concerns among the residents and authorities. The air quality of the capital city usually deteriorates after Diwali and due to surge in cases of stubble burning. However, the situation has become worrisome as the air quality has fallen into 'very poor' category in the beginning of November.

Delhi Air Quality: Change In Recent Days

The air quality in Delhi and nearby cities, including Noida and Gurugram surprisingly improved in last week of October due to continuous heavy rainfall. However, the air quality slipped into the very poor category on Monday with a fall in temperature.

The average AQI in Delhi was recorded at around 330 on Tuesday, while it crossed the dangerous mark of 400 at least three monitoring stations. The administration has implemented GRAP II across the entire National Capital Region to control the worsening situation.

Pakistan's Role In Situation

The reports suggest that record stubble burning cases in Pakistan's Punjab region has played a key role in this sudden worsening of the air quality. The Pakistani newspaper DAWN, while citing satellite data, has reported that 13,241 stubble burning incidents were recorded in the region between October 1 and 29, nearly 4.2 times than the cases of Punjab in India.

Apart from this, stubble burning cases significantly increased in Lahore and nearby regions in the last week of October, making it the most polluted city in the world with the AQI crossing 500. Amid the surge in cases of stubble burning, the northwesterly winds are pushing the smoke from Punjab and Haryana towards Delhi-NCR. The surface air in the capital city is not flowing freely due to a dip in temperature, leading to the worrying situation.

The situation for the residents of Delhi is likely to get worse in the coming days as north-westerly winds is expected to persist for at least next four days. Apart from this, further dip in temperature and bursting of firecrackers are likely to add insult to injury.
