A day after a nine-year-old class 3 girl died after suddenly collapsing in the classroom of Lovely Public School in Delhi's Mayur Vihar, principal Bhawna said that the girl suffered a cardiac arrest.
While speaking to the media, she said that the girl had gone out to play during the games period. After returning from there, she stood in the classroom for two minutes and collapsed.
"The child had gone out to play. She returned from her play period, entered the classroom, stood for about two minutes, and then collapsed. We took her to the hospital, where the doctors stated that it was a cardiac arrest," she said.
She added that the school was never informed about any such health issue. "We took her straight to the hospital and informed her mother immediately. Another teacher brought the mother to the hospital right away. We had never been informed of any such health issues; we had no prior knowledge of anything like that. The parents never mentioned anything, and the child did not appear to be ill. It was around 9:00 AM," she said.
The classroom CCTV captured the moment when the girl collapsed. A teacher was seen carrying the child out for medical assistance. Earlier on Wednesday, the principal said that the school staff noticed an injury to the child's chin.
"We saw that the girl sustained an injury to her chin, which was bleeding. We then rushed her to the hospital," the principal was quoted by India Today.
Meanwhile, the family has alleged that the girl was not administered CPR, a life-saving primary care in such cases.
The girl's relative reportedly alleged that no adequate medical arrangements are there in the school to handle emergencies despite charging substantial fees. They questioned why CPR was not administered immediately after she collapsed.
When asked about CPR, the principal said that the staff initially believed that the girl lost consciousness due to the chin injury.
