Delhi Riots: In a major relief to the activist Sharjeel Imam, the Karkardooma Court on Tuesday granted him an interim bail from October 4 to October 10 to attend his cousin's wedding. In a post on X, Imam's brother Muzammil informed that Sharjeel has been granted the bail to attend the family function. The student activist has been under custody in connection with a case alleging larger conspiracy in the 2020 Delhi riots.
Sharjeel Imam Gets Interim Relief
"Interim bail has been granted to my brother Sharjeel Imam for attending our cousin’s marriage from 4th to 10th October 2026," Muzammil wrote on X. The interim relief was given to Imam days ahead of hearing by Delhi High Court on his regular bail plea on September 30. Along with Imam, the high court will also hear the bail plea of Umar Khalid, another prime accused in the case.

SC Denied Bail In January
Earlier in January, the Supreme Court denied bail to the two activists while granting relief to five other accused in the case. The top court pointed out that all the accused could not be treated on the equal ground, adding that the charges against Imam and Khalid were serious.
However, the apex court stated that both of them could renew their pleas after the examination of protected witness or after a year of its ruling. The fresh pleas were later dismissed by a Delhi court earlier in July, taking the matter to the high court. However, ahead of the hearing, the Delhi Police have opposed the bail by alleging that both of them were the "masterminds" of the conspiracy.

Delhi HC Sought Response From Police
Earlier in July, the high court issued notice to the state police, seeking its response to Sharjeel Imam's plea seeking bail in the larger conspiracy case. Imam was arrested and later booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in 2020 for allegedly being one of the masterminds of the riots in northeast Delhi that claimed 53 lives and over 700 people were left injured.
