The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday ordered a Special Summary Revision (SSR) of electoral rolls in 17 states and union territories, with January 1, 2027, set as the qualifying date.

The directive was issued under Section 21 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950. This latest exercise is a part of the ECI's broader effort to update existing electoral rolls ahead of upcoming elections, ensuring all eligible citizens are added to the voter lists. The development comes amid controversy surrounding alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
