Delhi Parking Issue: Delhi Lieutenant Governor (LG) Sardar TS Sandhu on Thursday chaired a high-level review meeting over the illegal parking issue. MCD Commissioner, DMRC MD, Special Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Chairperson (NDMC), VC (DDA), Director (SPA), and other officials attended the meeting.

Chaired a high-level review with stakeholder agencies to tackle Delhi’s persistent parking and mobility bottlenecks, the LG posted in X.

Underscoring his goals: faster execution, better coordination and less congestion, he said he was working to build a more commuter-friendly Viksit Dilli (Developed Delhi).

Sandhu highlighted key points discussed in the meeting, saying he has directed officials to launch a coordinated action for developing new parking spaces and infrastructure.

Delhi Traffic Police Issues 3.83 Lakh Parking Prosecutions

Illegal parking is a perennial issue in the national capital which slows down vehicular traffic across the city. Earlier, on September 19, the Delhi Traffic Police conducted more than 5,300 special drives to remove encroachments and ease congestion across the city between January 1 and September 15, resulting in the removal of over 30,000 hawkers and more than 3.83 lakh prosecutions for improper parking.

A total of 5,399 special encroachment and congestion removal drives were conducted across all traffic ranges during the period. During the latest special drive from September 1 to 15, the traffic police conducted 170 drives, removed 1,477 rehri-patri and undertook 8,567 prosecutions for improper parking.

Project Sangam To Address Traffic Concerns

Under Project Sangam, aimed at strengthening coordination with residents and addressing local traffic concerns, the traffic police held 683 meetings with Resident Welfare Associations and Market Welfare Associations between April 5 and September 17.

A total of 569 suggestions were received during these meetings, of which 462 were acted upon, 107 were referred to other concerned agencies, and 20 joint patrolling initiatives were also conducted, officials said. Under the Traffic Pathshala initiative, 1,399 intersection drives were conducted between July 8 and September 17, focusing on road safety awareness and compliance.
