Fauji Founder: Leaving a secure and prestigious career is rarely an easy decision. For one former Indian Air Force officer, however, it was not about chasing a bigger opportunity or making a dramatic career move. It was about slowing down, being closer to her family, and making time for the people she loved.
After serving in the IAF for 14 years as a Short Service Commission officer, she decided to step away from the military and start a clothing business in Dehradun. Sharing her story on Instagram through her profile @thefaujifounder, she explained why she chose to leave a career that many would consider a dream job.

Why She Left A 14-Year IAF Career?
Her career switch has raised several questions online, she said, with many people wondering how she went from being an Air Force officer to running a boutique.
“Aap yahan se yahan kaise aaye? Matlab, aap Air Force officer se boutique wali aunty kaise ban gaye?” she recalled people asking.
Her answer, however, was far less complicated than many might expect. “Honestly, there is no fancy founder story here. I didn’t grow up dreaming of becoming a businesswoman,” she said.
The decision was primarily driven by her family. After years of a demanding career and postings away from home, she realised she wanted to spend more time with her children and ageing parents.
“I realised I wanted to be closer to my kids. My parents were also getting older; they needed me more. I wanted to pause a little and be available for the people I love,” she said.

Her ‘Pause’ Led Her To Dehradun
That much-needed pause eventually brought her back to Dehradun, her hometown. Her boutique is located just 100 metres from her home, allowing her to build something of her own without moving away from her family again.
“So I thought, if I’m going to build something, why not build it right here?” she said.
After years of military life, distant postings and the demands of service, the boutique also allowed her to explore a different, more creative side of herself. Clothing became a way for her to start something new while remaining close to home.
‘I’m Just A Mother Who Wanted To Be Around Her Kids’
For @thefaujifounder, the career change was not about replacing one identity with another. Instead, it was about choosing what felt right for her at that stage of life.
Addressing the questions surrounding her decision in an Instagram video, she said she simply wanted to pause, be present for her children, spend more time with her loved ones, and build a life in Dehradun.
“Sometimes, choosing your family, your roots and yourself is the biggest career decision you can make,” she said.
Her story also challenges the idea that leaving a successful career necessarily means giving something up. For her, the decision was about making room for a different kind of life, one where her family and home could be closer to the centre of it.
