Gujarat: Tensions erupted in Gujarat's Himmatnagar, Sabarkantha district, after a speeding Scorpio crashed into a group of pedestrians, injuring seven people.

What Happened In Himmatnagar?

According to a report by NDTV, the incident occurred near the Dolgarh-Patiya highway intersection in Himmatnagar. At least 12 pilgrims were walking along the busy four-lane highway when the vehicle suddenly hit them.

The victims were among the lakhs of devotees travelling on foot across Gujarat toward the famous Ambaji temple, which is expected to draw 40 lakh people this year.

Seven people sustained injuries in the incident, and all of them were admitted to the civil hospital for medical treatment, news agency IANS reported.

Driver Intercepted; Vehicle Set Ablaze

Immediately after the collision, the driver attempted to flee the scene, but was quickly intercepted by an angry crowd. Locals who caught the driver alleged that he was driving under the influence of alcohol and had set out in a brand-new Scorpio N.

Outraged by the accident and the driver's attempt to escape, the mob attacked the driver and set the vehicle ablaze. Videos from the area showed the car completely engulfed in flames on the highway with thick plumes of smoke rising from it.

Upon receiving information, police reached the spot to bring the situation under control and investigate the incident. Teams of police officers from nearby districts were also mobilised to the area.

Concerns Over Speeding And Reckless Driving

The incident has renewed severe concerns from pilgrims and pedestrians over persistent speeding and reckless driving along this stretch, despite warning signs and public notices previously issued by the local administration.
